Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
We believe that wild animals should be viewed – with no contact or interaction – doing what they do best: living in the wild. This trip includes wildlife viewing in Lake Naivasha, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara. Our leaders are trained to ensure that visitors don’t call out, whistle or try to get the attention of an animal as uncommon noises cause stress for them. Our drivers and local guides are also trained not to use their vehicle to get an animal to move or drive off road to get a better view or get closer to the animals.Where possible we choose to travel by land rather than air. By minimizing the use of flights on our trips, we are making journeys more stimulating and more sustainable for travelers. This trip through Kenya does not include any flights, providing all transport by road. We ensure our vehicles are fuel-efficient and well maintained with regular servicing. We use vehicles that are an appropriate size to suit the group size. For example, we wouldn’t use a 16-seater van if we only had five people traveling with us. We optimize our driving routes to reduce travel time and our carbon footprint, and we turn the engine off when travelers are visiting a site and not in the vehicle.
People
Our trips maximize the opportunity for travelers to engage meaningfully with local culture and communities. Many experiences on our trips also support traditional cultural practices – whether artisanal, culinary or otherwise. In turn, this helps to sustain and preserve these traditional practices so that future generations may continue to learn, enjoy and benefit from them. While traveling through Kenya, travelers will spend time in the village of Tepesua, meeting members of the local Maasai community, learning about their ancient culture and their modern-day projects to support their women and girls. Widows in Maasai communities are often very vulnerable, but in Tepesua they are provided with training in sewing and farming so that they can earn their own income, while preserving traditional crafts and lifestyles.Through our charitable Foundation, we support local organisations around the world to improve the livelihoods of vulnerable individuals and communities through sustainable travel experiences. We also include activities and visits on our trips to NGOs around the world who are supporting local communities through programs tailored to their needs. In Kenya, the our Foundation supports the East African Wildlife Society. This organisation protects the spectacular wildlife in the Masai Mara ecosystem through their anti-poaching ranger programs. They devise conservation plans, advocate for policy change and maintain public awareness of the area’s challenges through educational publications.
