Julian Alps travel guide

A new breed of tourist is arriving in the Julian Alps. They come in a large coach, stay for a night around Lake Bled, snap a selfie to show they’ve ticked off Slovenia, and then leave. But staying longer unlocks the Slovenian secrets that the whistle-stop tours miss. Photographers, for instance, can make the most of misty mornings and dew-dropped spiders’ webs; cross country skiers can take their time to shush across Slovenia’s snow-covered trails; and hikers and bikers can access no end of trails through spruce forests and over alpine pastures bedecked in wild orchids, edelweiss and the occasional chamois goat.
From visits to local beekeepers to farmhouse hosts who welcome you down to breakfast by asking, “What kind of eggs do you like?” – our vacations in the Julian Alps offer authentic alpine experiences either side of summer.
Our Julian Alps trips invite travelers to stay for longer as part of a small group or on a tailor made ski or e-bike vacation. You’ll get to enjoy life in an alpine village, like Gozd Martuljek and Kranjska Gora, as well as getting to know hosts, like Brigita, and local guides and activity instructors, like Andrej Kralj, who are now able to work in the area that they grew up in, all year round.

The Julian Alps are...

for exploring the whole year round, not just in the winter or summer.

The Julian Alps aren’t...

one of many countries to be ticked off on a whistle-stop European tour.

Is a Julian Alps vacation for you?

Go on vacation in the Julian Alps if…

… you’re up for a hike. Easy-going trails lead around and between lakes Bled and Bohinj, as well as through the forests of Martuljek Gorge en route to cascading waterfalls. The wild alpine pastures and spruce forests of the Pokljuka Plateau are hiking heaven, however if you want to head higher the summits of Bogatin (1,977m), Krn (2,244m), and Kanin (2,587m) can all be hiked after a night in a mountain hut. … you prefer pedals. Stay at a locally owned guest house in Kranjska Gora and you’ll be able to explore Triglav National Park’s extensive alpine cycling trails from your doorstep. Mountain or e-bikes are excellent for exploring the Radovna Valley with a local guide and, before you know it, you’ll be up and over the Vrsic Pass (1,611m) before descending into the Trenta Valley and along the Soca River. … skiing’s your thing. Due to the size of Slovenia, you can experience every ski resort in the country, and some in Italy, over the course of a week. Vogel and Krvavec ski resorts offer access to every gradient from nurseries to black runs. Top tip: cross country ski trails are free, uncrowded and offer a much more sociable way to meet local people shushing from Kranjska Gora to the Tamar Valley.

Don’t go on vacation in the Julian Alps if…

… you want to stay in luxury lakeside hotels. We invite travelers to stay at small, traditional hotels and family run pensions in out-of-the-way places like Gozd Martuljek and Radovljica. Accommodation owners will often have lived in the Julian Alps all their lives. Your stay will be on a B&B or half board basis so you can eat out locally or in a neighbouring village.
