We had a fantastic whale watching trip from Husavik. Saw several grey whales close to our boat. One was very active and actually breached for us!
Visit to steaming geothermal area bubbling pools of water and mud and smelling strongly of rotten eggs!
Tips?

The most memorable moment was the warmth and hospitality of our hosts (and their great home cooked Finnish cuisine), to interacting with the dogs and harnessing them, to the experience of a wood fired sauna beside a frozen lake each evening, this short vacation could not have been better.

The young people Sam and Rachel achieved confidence respectively in snowboarding and downhill skiing in a small quiet resort at Ancelle for the first three days...Successful as a way of satisfying all ages and giving the family precious time to be on our own without the pressures of work and university.

The husky dog sledging day - it was wonderful - you get your own set of huskies & sledge with a fur rug. Remember your ski goggles thou' - we had a lot of snow & you can go quite fast (particularly if light) - afterwards hot chocolate & homemade cake in a tippee with roaring fire! Fab. All of it, ice hotel, dog sled ride, meeting reindeer and seeing the northern lights 3 nights running.
Tips?
Book a northern lights photo tour, learn how to spot them and the skills to photograph them. Plenty of layers -29.5degrees centigrade at night.
Local benefits?
Yes, camp Ripan is very environmentally aware. The guides on the tour all respected the environment.

All of it ! Finnish Lapland is truly magical ! We were lucky to experience the fun of snowshoeing through deep freak snow the sun came out most days for amazing photos and we experienced the aurora in all their glory on our snowshoe night tour. Every day was different loved the husky safari, the cross country skiing the saunas followed by an ice pool plunge. Food accommodation all great thank you Rita!

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula was particularly lovely as was the prolific bird life generally. Food, though expensive, was almost universally superb, especially fish.

With hindsight I would have booked a proper 4 wheel drive vehicle as on the normal roads stopping is only generally possible at specific tourist spots. Because of the number of coach parties these get very busy and much of the surrounding area is roped off for conservation meaning that you cannot... (more)David Adams
