Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Self guided biking vacation in Montenegro

Environment

Most of our tours include the five National parks of Montenegro. Each of them features unique environments and rich ecological values, which require corresponding attitude from visitors. Lake Skadar, the biggest lake at the Balkan peninsula features a very rich bird fauna. In our multi-activity and family tours we offer bird watching with kayaks. These tours are guided by bird protection activists, who are supported by our programms.

We avoid using off-road jeep transfers, since some areas do have a very fragile soil surface. Anyhow we believe in the first line that our feet can take us everywhere. In order to avoid empty transfer kilometers we cooperate with transport providers, who are closest to a starting or pick up point of our tours. We include public transport in our tours where applicable. Eg. transfer by train form the coastline to the north of Montenegro saves 115km on the road.

In general we use almost no printed marketing material. To present our company and products we use tablets. The design works for our website is done by local creatives.

We encourage our guests to use re-fillable waterbottles, since tab water is drinkable in Montenegro.

Community

While including as many local people to our tours and we hope to build a bridge between visitors and locals and create better understanding for all day life challenges in Montenegro. Even there is most of the time a huge language barrier, both sides enjoy the direct interaction

We highly value the knowledge and work of our business partners, who most all of them being considered as friends. Our local guides we usually recruit from the Northern parts of Montenegro, since this part of the country provides little opportunities for employment.

Food & produce: Culinary: an integral part of real understanding and enjoyment of a region or country is eating the local food.
This ensures that the local producers see how valuable their produce is, in terms of keeping farming traditions alive, which on one side ensures a maintained landscape, which is on the other side the base for rural tourism. We encourage our guests to buy local produce for souvenirs eg. home made Rakija (spirit), honey products, artisan wines, olive oil products, etc.

We cooperate with farmer communities, which noticed that providing an insight to their daily life up in the mountains describes a special experience for guests. In return this interest in their lifestyle and the generated additional income contributes to make people to stay up in the mountains producing traditional dairy products and maintaining the landscape.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The landscape and the scenery in Montenegro are incredible. Reaching the top at Lake Skadar after 1,5 hour non-stop-cycling uphill in the heat is an uplifting experience. The view is always stunning. Very sleepy and unspoilt areas make you "feel alone on the planet":-).

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Day two is challenging. Be prepared for a long and tough riding day, especially in the heat. The distances at all the other days are very good to handle, especially day 4 to 7. Biking shorts are recommended, maybe even gloves due to the sweat in the heat for a better grip. Roads are mostly quiet, on those with more traffic, cars are often passing closely which is a little tiring.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We bought all our supplies in local shops and only used local restaurants. We had some very pleasant contacts with local people, we felt welcome at all times.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The trip was wonderful and is highly recommended. Montenegro is an amazing country that we would love to come back to. The company was very good in all concerns, always helpful and friendly. Bikes and equipment are very satisfying. Local mobile phone and detailed route descriptions are provided. The variety of the different bike routes (mountains, woods, small villages, coast line, bay) was very well chosen. The mixture of an active and relaxing vacation (bike riding, swimming, sunbathing, enjoying good food) makes vacation brilliant. Prices in Montenegro are very decent.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Montenegro is a beautiful country. The scenery was stunning and we were welcomed in all the places that we stayed. The cycling itself was challenging - as the maps did not always reflect the actual road layouts and the routes were not always entirely straightforward. The hill climbs were tough but always rewarding.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The bicycles we used were high quality mountain bikes and therefore heavy and strong. The heat during the day ( early September) was such that we would have been better to start each day much earlier and avoided the heat of the day for
the climbing. The routes were on the whole very quiet - so no facilities - we needed to carry plenty of water and provisions. Better maps would have helped - but the support from the company was excellent.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Once we arrived - there was no environmental impact as we cycled each day between places and received a planned taxi transfer on one day. Our luggage was moved - so that did involve car journeys. we bought all our provisions in local shops and only used local restaurants. We had some very pleasant interactions with local people on each day of our touring and felt welcome at all times.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was an excellent vacation and we will return to Montenegro in due course. The company was very good to deal with and had chosen a good itinerary for this particular tour.
