1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
We loved Transylvania in early summer; staying in village houses with their innovative bathrooms, excellent cooking and an insight into local life. We enjoyed the stunning countryside, the lovely walks and the great food. It was fun to have a range of convenience and comfort with a mix of village homestays and city hotels, private versus public transport, etc. The Museum to the Victims of Communism was unexpectedly revealing and interesting.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Bring a reading light for the bedrooms!
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think the homestays in the villages benefited local people, and encourages an appreciation in the traditional ways of life and methods of farming. The agency was happy to book us local transport when we requested it.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Excellent!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
There were many memorable parts of our vacation 1. In the countryside: milking sheep, walks in the meadows 2. Castles and Fortresses: Hunedora, Calnic (where we stayed a night) 3. Painted monasteries: all fascinating particularly Voronet
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Our guides agreed that the current Lonely Planet (Romania and Bulgaria 7th Edition July 2107) is both inaccurate and inadequate. There are better guides.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I think we benefited locals by staying in some of the guest houses but some were owned by absent landlords. Our impact in other areas was not clear.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. However we should make it clear that we are experienced travelers (for more than 20yrs worldwide) and have become fussy! The guides were very good, knowledgeable and helpful. Both were as ready to learn from us as we were from them so we had very interesting discussions.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
This tour takes in consideration important environmental aspects:- The car used for traveling between locations has low CO2 emissions and uses little fuel. Also the itinerary is optimized so the number of kilometers driven is reduced.
- You will visit the bear sanctuary where previously captive bears are offered a decent habitat and by going there and purchasing tickets you contribute to the well-being of those bears. You will also learn about the bears and bear conservation in Romania.
- Most of the ingredients for the meals are locally sourced, usually produced through traditional agriculture and some of them are organic encouraging chemical-free agriculture and at the same time sustaining local jobs.
- By staying at rural guesthouses you encourage the consumption of more of the locally produced goods rather than staying at a big hotel; this can include traditional pottery instead of modern dishes, local textiles used for decoration, wood sourced locally for furniture, floors or heating.
People
- All suppliers are local so the income is directed to them and jobs are enabled. You will stay in family owned rural guesthouses (for example in Viscri, Bucovina and Maramures); some of the meals will be arranged there as well so the income will stay locally.- We encourage traveling in small groups such as in this case as we don’t want to create demand for large accommodation facilities, especially in rural and natural areas where they would contrast with the traditional architecture.
- You will visit crafts workshops and through your presence you encourage those craftsmen to continue their work and the guide will compensate their time spent with us during the visit by giving them money or buying products from them
- The first two nights are spent in a wonderful fortress from the 14th century where 2 rooms have been turned into guestrooms so the administrators can get additional money, besides entrance tickets, and use this money for the preservation of the site.
