Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
PlanetCambodia’s natural landscapes, from the seasonally flooded forests of Tonlé Sap to the dense jungles of the Cardamom Mountains, are home to some of Southeast Asia’s most threatened ecosystems. In recent years, pressures such as deforestation and development have affected some of these more delicate habitats, making thoughtful, responsible travel an important way to support their long-term protection. Choosing experiences that prioritise conservation helps ensure that your visit contributes to safeguarding Cambodia’s biodiversity while also supporting sustainable livelihoods and the preservation of one of the region’s most significant ecological areas.
Cardamom Tented Camp, set deep within Botum Sakor National Park in Koh Kong Province, is one of the most impactful examples of sustainable tourism in the country. This remote riverside eco-camp was created with a clear mission: “Your Stay Keeps the Forest Standing.” By staying here, you directly support efforts to prevent illegal logging, poaching and land encroachment in one of Cambodia’s last intact rainforests.
The camp operates with a minimal carbon footprint, using solar power, locally sourced produce and low-impact infrastructure. Guests stay in just nine safari-style tents, each designed to blend into the natural surroundings while still offering comfort and essential amenities. Days revolve around nature-based activities, guided forest hikes, kayaking along quiet waterways and learning firsthand from the rangers who patrol the area. These experiences deepen your understanding of Cambodia’s conservation challenges while helping to fund the ongoing protection of the rainforest.
People
PeopleCambodia’s recent history has shaped a society that is both rebuilding and reclaiming its cultural identity after the devastation of the Khmer Rouge era. Many communities, particularly in rural provinces, continue to face challenges such as limited access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities. Responsible travel can play a meaningful role in supporting local resilience, cultural revival and long-term development.
Phare Circus, performing in Siem Reap and Battambang, is a powerful example of this. The circus is an extension of Phare Ponleu Selpak (Phare PS), a non-profit organisation that provides vocational training, arts education, counselling and community outreach to around 1,000 children and young adults each year. Their work has been central to the revival of Cambodian performing arts, many of which were nearly lost during the conflict.
Attending a Phare Circus performance is more than an evening of entertainment; it’s a direct contribution to a movement that empowers young Cambodians through creativity, discipline and cultural expression. Each show blends theatre, music, dance, acrobatics and storytelling to explore themes rooted in Cambodian society, history and everyday life. Your visit helps fund free schooling, professional arts training and social support programmes for vulnerable youth.
