Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Environment
We believe that walking trips are the best way to experience a destination. It allows you more time to appreciate changing landscapes and get to know locals in villages and towns you pass through that would otherwise be overlooked. Traveling on foot has minimal impact on your environment, but we encourage everyone to stay on the marked trails to avoid erosion. This slow style of travel not only affords you more time to appreciate Europe, but positively contributes to the regions that host you.

Our Waste Management Policy encourages our travelers to take their own reusable water bottles, coffee cups and reusable stuff sacks to avoid single-use plastics. We follow this same philosophy in our office as well as on the trail, in our London office we have banned single use coffee cups and water bottles. We use recycled paper in our office, and are working towards reducing the amount of paper we use, and we recycle all our paper and plastic waste.

In 2000 we developed the award-winning Responsible Travel Guidebook, which presented our Travel Group’s comprehensive policies on sustainable travel. Over the years our Responsible Travel Guidebook has evolved to meet the ever-changing landscape of sustainable travel. In March 2018 The Thoughtful Traveler booklet was launched, which empowers you with suggestions about how you can be part of the solution and collectively make the world a better place when you travel. Everyone is encouraged to read the Thoughtful Traveler ebook before departure.
Community

The Impacts of this Trip

In the regions that we travel through, tourism is a valuable source of income for many local people, so we aim to ensure that your money benefits the community that hosts you. We try to maximise the positive benefits of tourism and give you the most authentic travel experience possible by opting for family-run lodgings over international chains. For example, when available, we stay in a restored 19th Century building in Herrerias de Valcarce. The Castedo family have lovingly restored this building, and the second generation of their family now manages the guesthouse ,with their kitchen focusing on seasonal local foods for you to enjoy.

We use local guides throughout this trip. Our Spanish guides are highly experienced, have strong local knowledge and a love and understanding of their country. In addition to the walking guide who escorts the group throughout the tour, in the cities you will be led by more specialist city guides (Burgos, Leon and Santiago). They will be able to share their knowledge of their hometowns with you, including the traditions, and the historic treasures.

During the tour you will have opportunities and are encouraged to sample local foods and produce. In the wine region of Rioja Alavesa we have included for you a visit to La Guardia, here you get the chance to try local wines. Where possible we have selected local family run restaurants for our evening meals helping to support the local economy. These types of restaurants are a great way to try local specialities including Caldo Gallego, a local hearty soup the perfect starter for a hungry walker. During our walks you will be encouraged to stop in locally run small cafés to rest your legs and enjoy a traditional cake, beer or tapas. During these stops you will get to know the friendly locals who manage these establishments and help ensure some of your tourist spend stays in these small villages, benefiting the locals who live here.
