During the trek, locally produced fresh food is purchased where appropriate, including products such as cheese from local villages. Local products are preferred to imported goods where possible, and Andean ingredients are incorporated into the cooking.

All non-organic waste is carried out of trekking areas. Waste is reduced by using products with minimal packaging, avoiding litter and keeping water sources clean. Campsites are left clean after use. Organic waste is disposed of by burying it at an appropriate depth and location.

People

During tours, visitors are encouraged to learn about Peru, the cultures of the local communities and staff, and the areas through which they travel. Guides provide informal talks and discussions about aspects of local life, helping visitors develop a greater understanding of the region and the people who live there.
Since 2006, we have contributed annually to the Huchuy Yachaq community project in the Hermanos Ayar neighbourhood on the outskirts of Cusco.
The project was established by volunteer social workers and teachers to provide social and educational support to children and families in the neighbourhood. Children are encouraged to participate in afternoon study and recreational sessions and vacation programmes. Previous contributions have supported educational books and games, tables and chairs, improvements to the community-owned building, functioning toilets, school materials and vacation activities.
