Walking the trail was very hard in places, but so well organised that it was a great sense of achievement to complete each day and the trail itself. When we got to the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu we arrived in a lot of low cloud which took the edge off it, however we walked on a bit further and got a great high level view of the lost city so we were more than happy with this.

My guide Krishna and porter Ali were helpful throughout with Ali never saying a negative word about my kit bag he was carrying and Krishna being especially on the early morning ascent to Thorong La Pass. He sensibly walked 40/50 paces then stopped for 30 seconds and then on again etc. At that altitude the pace was just right and we made it to the top in wonderful snowy conditions with clear blue skies at 8.30 am – a great memory to have. The whole trip through the Andean mountains, the remoteness and the beauty of the surroundings. And of course, the way Valentin's company organized it all, it was perfect in one word.
Tips?
Do it! Prepare for a serious physical challenge, especially the Inca trail requires a good condition, steps all the way uphill en slippery stones (when it rains) downhill.
