1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The storm (and the German alarm message) that caused some of us to stop cycling for the day (and continue by bus / train)
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Train on very long rides because some of the days are very long.
Pack a small travel kettle because most hotel rooms do not have coffee / tea
making
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Hotels appeared to be employing local people and our mid day meals were being
sourced from local shops etc
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
We achieved our aims with good support from Lindsey and Sunny. Their friendly
approach made the whole trip work well.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
Treat the earth well: it was not given to you by your parents, it was loaned to you by your children”. Old Kenyan proverb. This proverb has been the foundation for our ‘Mission Statement’ since 1988 when it was featured in our first brochures.Cycling is the most environment-friendly way to travel and on this trip again there are as low carbon footprints as possible. We use a ferry to head out from the UK to the Netherlands and then cycle through the north of the continent and again use a Scandinavian super ferry which is energy efficient for the hop across the countries.
During the cycle tour we follow the principles of ‘No Trace Travel’ by doing the following:
We choose lunch stops carefully
All rubbish is carried back by us
We don't use disposable cutlery but recycle the dishes which are hygienically washed daily
We try and use tap water and fill the butts avoiding as much we can buy plastic mineral water bottles
Where possible, we choose food with minimal packaging to reduce plastic waste. Most places we pass through have recycling options and we encourage everyone to use them for specific items like batteries or to dispose of used batteries safely in their home country.
We set an example in our own office - we recycle paper and ink cartridges and minimise the amount of printing we do etc.
People
For lunches, we buy local goods from local people as much as possible using local bakeries making traditional delicacies.Keeping in mind the level of comfort we chose the accommodation and where possible use more locally run hotels. Although picnic lunch is provided, our crew will get it fresh from the nearby local bakeries which will probably sell varieties of German bread, Dutch cheese or a range of Danish pastries to try out.
We also encourage our tour members to visit locally owned restaurants each evening, we do have a couple of suggestions and want you to try something different each night. Who knows how a dish of Red Herring or Maultachen tastes, so it is part of the overall experience!
We encourage group members to take an interest in the flora and fauna. On this trip, we often see various birds like Grey Heron, Eider, and Common Shel duck can be a common site near the Island of Texel which is great for bird watching. Northern Ravens do flock along the Kiel Canal and then in plenty of sea-life along the Zealand region of Denmark which include birds like Greater Scaup Garganey among the few.
