Vacation information

No Snow?
We are running this trip at the time when typically there is an abundance of snow in Durmitor; with February typically being the best month for skiing and snowboarding. In case there is no snow in this period, we could offer so much more in Durmitor and Montenegro! In case there is no natural snow, we would be able to offer the activities of snowshoeing or horse riding. Montenegro has many micro climates and is a relatively small country, so we can also as an alternative choose cultural & sightseeing tours to Monasteries, nearby towns or trips down to the coast where the temperatures are much warmer to visit the coastal towns of Tivat, Herceg Novi or Kotor. We might be able to also arrange the activities of trekking, sailing or kayaking as well!
Multi generational:
This vacation is suitable for grandparents, parents and children.
Dietary requirements:
We can cater for vegetarian and vegan diets.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The most exciting part of the vacation for us was learning to ski in a truly beautiful setting with one on one individual instructors while experiencing amazing Montenegrin cuisine curtesy of Goca. Our kids loved the skiing and the great après ski food served at the little restaurant on the slopes for lunch – Priganice (doughnuts) with honey… what a winner. Stan and Goca were also amazing ambassadors of their country and we learnt so much about the culture in our downtime off the slopes.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Top tips are to embrace the layers! During the day time it can get up to around 5 degrees which is a fair bit when you are in your ski gear and working hard. An appropriate breathable set of base layers is a must! Other than that there isn’t much to worry about as Stan and Goca take care of logistics and travel etc. For us It was great to be able to come skiing and know that the details were taken care of for us, ski passes, boot and ski hire and sledges in the afternoon as well as getting to and from the ski center.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Stan and Goca's philosophy is all about supporting the local community, for instance one of ski instructors lives in a local village and is also a local hiking and canyoning guide (who Stan and Goca use in the summer for other tours), while the other instructor was also a local farmer. It was evident that our hosts knew all of the local community and actively supported them; the benefit to us was we got an amazing experience and were really looked out for by the locals and got some great tips. The kids by the end of our week were in love with Montenegro and skiing having gained so much confidence.

In terms of environmental impact, Stan and Goca's apartments were well insulated and warm - despite the cosiness inside the 2 foot or so of snow on the roof showed there was little heat loss. Recycling is limited in the mountains to just glass at the moment but food waste was really kept to a minimum despite ample hearty meals!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

All in all it was an amazing experience for our family; fabulous hosts, lovely food, great skiing, alpine views, not too crowded and a unique culture. We can't wait to come again. we would rank it 5 out of 5.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Skiing in the mountains, amazing home cooked meals with Stan and his wife, the
views from the Kotor Via Ferrata, the views of the bays and mountains, and standup paddleboarding to the islands in the middle of the bay. Everything was
incredible from start to finish.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be flexible going in with activities and days with a mind to the weather and don't
be afraid to ask questions. Stan had great advice on what would work best in what area of Montenegro and helped us create an amazing vacation, which was invaluable and hugely improved our experience by allowing us to make the most of every single day.

Even when we ran into bad weather it was all smoothly communicated and taken
care of, but for that to work, sometimes you have to remember that you can dance in the rain just as well as the sun.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely! All of the guides were local and friendly, we ate at local restaurants,
visited local areas of interest, and truely felt that we were allowed to experience the local culture as a part of it rather than just observing. Visiting the Durmitor National Park and Kotor bay heritage sites was an incredible experience as well.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

15 out of ten. Everything was smooth and perfect, even when the weather was less so. From the first moment when we were picked up from the airport and whisked away to Durmitor it was like a dream come true. Every detail was taken care of, Stan and his wife were wonderful company and full of local knowledge, we were looked after by an incredible team of local guides, the scenery was spectacular, and I cannot wait to visit this wonderful country again!

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We have been living by the coast in Montenegro for over 16 years. We are lovers of nature and along with the stunning Montenegrin coastline we also very much enjoy the mountains of Montenegro and especially the UNESCO National park of Durmitor. We absolutely love and appreciate our camp which is surrounded by its perfect nature and it's scenic setting, and for guests to enjoy both adventures and relaxing. Along with pristine nature there is an abundance of great adventure activities on offer for all guests to take part in and we hope all our guests will have a relaxing and fun filled active vacation stay with us.

Nearly all of our activities have the concept of Eco tourism and mostly all of our activities are deemed as not harmful to the environment. Indeed the Durmitor National Park is a UNESCO protected national park and considered an 'Air' spa for visitors. With an abundance of snow, Durmitor is a natural ski resort, which does not use snow cannons.

We provide all our guests with a friendly welcome cooked meal and drink on arrival of stay. We also provide a cooked dinner each night, where we buy all our produce directly from the market place, from local farmers in the area, such as locally produced preserves, meats and cheeses. We also offer drinks that are locally produced such as wines and plum brandy, etc.

Our camp is close by to the mountains and forests and we shall be discarding wherever possible all rubbish for recycling. We shall also have our outdoor lights run on solar energy and energy saving bulbs. We also offer our guests free usage of mountain bikes which we shall encourage our guests to use, so they can travel around the area by Eco transport.

Our team leaders are all local to the area and we hope to show our guests the benefits of protecting our environment on our activities. Our Hiking team leaders are also part of the conservation of the Durmitor forest and they will be explaining all aspects of nature to our guests on activities.

People

We directly aim to create jobs and employ and empower local people in that region, which are heavily dependent on incomes from tourism in this region. Locals in the Durmitor region generally live from tourism or farming and so it's a massive chunk of their income to be involved within the sector of tourism.

We employ 6 team leaders and also have a staff for the day to day running of our camp. We are hoping that we shall be able to make a difference in the community by employing locals and they shall have a direct benefit of being employed and gaining an income from our weekly package stays.

We shall encourage all of our staying guests to explore Durmitor for themselves on free days and evening times, and hope they'll visit local restaurants, cafes and eateries in the town of Zabljak which will economically help other local business's.

We shall endeavor to include as much possible for local people to be employed and for income to be spent back into the camp and to stay with the community.
