Travel guides

Transylvania
Follow a farm track past flower-filled meadows, fast-flowing rivers and steeply sloped primeval forests; in the distance you spy the turrets of a cast...
History
History vacations suffer from an image problem. They conjure up a picture of a sedate older crowd crammed into coaches, ticking off a list of antiquity...

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Every day was a new adventure, with both scheduled and unscheduled visits to beautiful countryside, local arts, crafts and sights and fascinating characters,
all made possible by our amazing guide. There was never a dull moment. For me, speaking in German to Herr Schaas in Richis, and actually meeting
William Blacker (whose book inspired me to visit this beautiful and fascinating country) were the absolute highlights.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared to go off-piste and have experiences of a lifetime: ask for Ben Mehedin as your guide.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Absolutely; we were lucky to have an 'eco-warrior' as our tour guide who knew his stuff, and what he didn't know, he would always find out by getting in touch with one of his many expert contacts. We saw so much interesting wildlife (red backed shrikes, lesser=spotted eagles, yellow=bellied toads). We stayed with local people, ate more locally bred, produced and prepared food than we would normally have in a year, and visited so many people whose skills are being supported and harnessed by initiatives to encourage local sustainability. We particularly loved our overnight stays in traditional houses furnished with traditional and locally made rugs, hangings and textiles.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

One of the best we have ever had. It has made a very deep impression on both of us for many reasons. We will return!

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

We are committed to playing our part through caring for the places and communities that we visit. We will continue to work with our suppliers to deliver a responsible product and quality performance.
The company is a founder member of the Association of Eco-Tourism in Romania and we are aware of the need to safeguard the best environmental practice in Romania. We are also aware of the threat to wildlife - that too many visitors can be a problem - our guides advise travelers how to respect fauna and flora.
We will contribute 5 euros per customer to Foundation Conservation Carpathia, a private conservation initiative that has the goal to create a world-class wilderness reserve in Southern Carpathians.

People

We are committed to working for a better community for all, in particular in the areas visited by our customers. We are leaders in developing tourism in remote areas of Romania, bringing a source of income through a steady flow of responsible tourists. In particular, we have been leaders in bringing a source of income through tourism to some of the more remote parts of Romania. It is important to balance the impact of visitors with the effect on local communities and we strive to do this in a responsible way.

Good relationships have been established with a range of local supplier ranging from those providing accommodation to artisans making products with historical significance. Working with Responsible Travel we are trying to open up new areas of tourism in Romania by encouraging small groups to visit more remote areas where the income they provide can make a real difference.
