Travel guides
The Okavango Delta floods life into Botswana. It's a waterhole on an epic scale.
If you’re looking to travel to southern Africa, our travel guide is the best place to start your journey.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
We are committed to responsible values, which are echoed in all elements of our tours and vacations. We work with accommodation providers and local suppliers who share this dedication to responsible travel by focusing on environmental, conservation and community initiatives. For example, this Luxury Botswana Safari vacation features eco-friendly accommodation, such as Mombo Camp, which is 100% solar powered (both electricity and hot water), uses treated waste water and reverse osmosis filtration to provide drinking water, as well as eco-friendly detergents etc. Meanwhile, Selinda Camp is owned by the Great Plains group, which has their own foundation, Great Plains Conservation. This foundation aims to secure African landscapes large enough to protect resident and seasonal wildlife populations, such as converting hunting land or agricultural land to wildlife conservation supported by photographic tourism.
You will visit several national parks and reserves on this itinerary. In our detailed pre-departure travel pack we have included a note to remind you not leave any litter in the national parks and reserves – everything you carry in, you must carry out. Aside from the environmental damage, litter can be harmful to the wildlife.
People
During your time in Botswana we encourage you to support the local economy by buying authentic handmade products such as cotton fabrics, wood carvings, pottery and silver jewellery at markets, villages and small-scale souvenir shops, rather than hotel tourist shops or on organised shopping trips. When you buy products at markets, villages and small-scale souvenir shops you are helping to support a fragile economy and supporting local artisans helps keep traditional crafts alive. The accommodations we have selected also have their own community initiatives and projects. For example, Vumbura Plains Camp is located in a Wildlife Management Area leased from five villages through the Okavango Community Trust and this partnership ensures the benefits of ecotourism are shared with local neighbours as stakeholders. In addition, the camp’s Children in the Wilderness project educates to the next generation of decision-makers, inspiring them to care for their natural heritage and become custodians of the future.
To further support local communities, we encourage you to support the Pack for a Purpose initiative (Selinda Camp and Vumbura Plains are also partners) and use a small amount of space in your luggage to pack supplies for local community projects in Botswana. You can leave your donations with our partner hotels and lodges who will pass them on to the school, medical center or animal welfare project.
