Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
- We help conserve the Romanian heritage through different means. For example, in Sibiu and Viscri we chose hotels that are housed in traditional or historic buildings. They have been recently renovated, but they conserve the characteristics of old Saxon buildings, such as the tall ceiling and the eye-roof. Moreover, the interior is also decorated in a specific style.- We travel in small groups, usually formed of 4-6 participants, thus lessening the impact on community and nature. As photographers, we do not intrude into people’s lives, we are simple observers and we are respectful of all nature, people and places we encounter along the way. By traveling in small groups we easily blend in local communities
- Each participant is advised on ways in which water, energy and waste usage can be reduced. For example, on the first day of the tour we provide the participants with one water bottle, after which we constantly refill it, thus minimizing the use of plastic bottles
- The itineray is optimized such that the number of kilometers driven is reduced. The car used during the tour has a small engine, as to have low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In villages and towns, we encourage tourists to walk rather than use the car
- In Viscri and Ieud we stay at local guesthouses that produce their own food from organic sources
People
- All the meals are included either at rural guesthouses that cook food from locally-grown ingredients (Viscri and Ieud) or at locally-owned restaurants- We support local people and craftsmen that conserve authentic traditions and occupations. Through our visit we encourage them to continue their work and the guide will compensate their time by giving them money or buying products. During this tour we will visit a glass factory, a family of coppersmiths, a bakery, a blacksmith and a family that has old farming equipment.
- All suppliers are local so part of the income stays with them and jobs are enabled
- All the staff in charge of the planning of the tour, as well as the guide, are local. They are extremely knowledgeable and well-prepared and as a result, we ensure that they are remunerated correctly. Periodically they are encouraged to take part in cultural events and training courses, as well as travel throughout Romania to get to know the country better.
