Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

The Ilboru Safari Lodge where we stay in Arusha are the lead sponsor of a nursery business producing seedlings of indigenous trees that have been widely cut down. So far they have built up a nursery of 4,500 seedlings and invested in infrastructure to support the project. The aim is to transplant these seedlings back into communal land with the support of the Ilboru elders. The project has been embraced by guests of Ilboru Safari Lodge who are invited to visit the nursery and help with planting as well as indirectly helping through the funding provided.

On this trip we operate a policy to minimise plastic use and are working with our suppliers to provide water coolers on buses and vehicles, plus in many of our chosen accommodations, to enable our customers to top up water using their own bottles as they go along.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

People

Many safari trips use chain lodges and hotels where money goes to foreign owners, we use local owned guesthouses and have weaved into the trip experiences that directly benefit the communities. Our accommodation in Karatu, The Ngorongoro Farmhouse, directly supports the local communities, including sponsoring two local schools, and offering guests a guided two of the beautiful vegetable gardens by the local villagers.

Our partners who operate this trip are three Tanzanian brothers who formed the company in 1969, they have first hand knowledge of a wealth of expertise and with our input invest in developing the skills and education their local team providing opportunity and life skills.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
