Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
By choosing a Slow Travel approach we have put environmentally-friendly tourism at the heart of our operations, encouraging people to make sure any trip to Peru is a fully immersive and meaningful adventure that also benefits the places we visit. As well as the community-based initiatives mentioned in the ‘People” section, we also visit a reforestation project in the Sacred Valley, take walking and cycling tours in Lima, and kayak to the islands on Lake Titicaca rather than take the bustling tourist boats. Wherever we tread, we am to do it lightly and bring investment to conservation projects.
The trip is also designed to have just two domestic flights across the full three weeks of travel, and even these are only included because the drives would take a minimum of two full days each by private car. We also encourage our guests going forward to fly abroad on vacation less often, but when they do to stay for longer and travel in a eco-friendly manner.
People
This in-depth itinerary includes a unique full week in the Sacred Valley in order to fully immerse yourselves in community-based tourism initiatives. A day with the Misminay for example helps fund local education and health facilities, and provides direct income to prevent community members having to leave the area for other jobs, making it easier to also preserve their culture and traditions. Similarly we spend a day in an agricultural community, with money going directly into the pockets of the local small farmers and villagers who host us, and join the 'Inka Routes Experiential Tourist Association' for a cultural hike on the way to Cuzco. We handpick Peruvian-owned hotels (boutique independent ones where possible) to keep more money locally rather than going to international chains, and partner exclusively with a ground agent renowned for their ‘community first’ approach, where they collaborate directly with the locals on how they want tourism to operate in their own region. This results in a fairer, warmer, and more authentic experience.
