Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
All of our trips aim for a 'Slow Travel' approach. We encourage our guests to fly on vacation less often, and where flying is unavoidable (such as reaching Peru) to make sure the trip is a fully immersive and meaningful adventure, that is both enjoyable for the traveler but also benefits the places we visit.Alongside the initiatives mentioned in the ‘People” section, we also focus on walking, cycling, and rafting/kayaking when exploring places as diverse as bustling Lima, mystical Lake Titicaca, and the historic and cultural sites of the Sacred Valley. Wherever we tread, we am to do it lightly and bring investment to conservation projects.
The trip is also designed with just one local flight included, and even then only to avoid a drive that would take a minimum of two full days by private car. We also encourage our guests going forward to fly abroad on vacation less often, but when they do to stay for longer and travel in a eco-friendly manner.
People
This example itinerary, and indeed all of our trips in Peru, includes a heavy focus on community-based adventure tourism. One such experience is joining the 'Inka Routes Experiential Tourist Association' for a cultural hike on the way to Cuzco. These kinds of initiatives are at once interesting, fun, eye-opening, and provide real opportunities for local communities to build a living without sacrificing their culture or having to leave their communities.
We also spend several days in the Sacred Valley to become fully immersed in the colourful living culture, alongside the world-famous Inca history. This includes a full day with the Misminay community, which for example helps fund local education and health facilities, as well as providing income.
Similarly we offer optional days here either with an agricultural community, with money going directly into the pockets of the local small farmers and villagers who host us, or a Reforestation Project that helps local efforts to bring parts of the valley back to its original habitat.
Across the whole trip we handpick Peruvian-owned hotels (boutique independent ones where possible), to keep more money locally rather than going to international chains, and partner exclusively with a ground agent renowned for their ‘community first’ approach, where they collaborate directly with the locals on how they want tourism to operate in their own region. This results in a fairer, warmer, and more authentic experience.
