Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

You couldn't get a more inherently sustainable way to travel than by train. Not only is it a wonderful way to see landscapes change as you traverse a country, or in this case three countries along the Mediterranean coast, but it has an extremely low carbon footprint compared to flying or using vehicles. On this trip we travel by train from Barcelona to Florence. There is only one day on the trip that we use a charter bus instead of train. On arrival, we do city tours predominantly on foot, and transfer to our hotels by either walking or occasionally by taxi where the distance is too great. This helps to minimise the environmental impact of the tour as much as possible.

Our local tour leaders do not use single use plastic bottles and also encourage our customers to use their reusable water bottles. Tap water is safe to drink. The local agent we use recycles according to local laws in their office building. Above that they aim to reduce the unnecessary use of printing paper and also plastic bottles, cutlery and food containers. On tour our local agent and tour leaders try to follow a zero waste travel strategy whenever possible.

As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.

People

We purposely do not include evening meals on this trip. This allows you to eat out at local family-run restaurants which is both an opportunity to experience the traditional cuisine and specialities of this foodie region and also helps support the local economy.

This trip visits a vineyard which we'll have the chance to support through tasting and then perhaps purchasing their various wines. Nourished by the Mediterranean sun and the richness of their different wine districts, the Languedoc wines all have their own personality, whether they are reds, whites, rosés or sparkling wines. They are part of the rich cultural and culinary heritage of the region. There's are the chance to purchase other souvenirs and support some of the many small independent shops found in the places we stay at and visit.

We use local tour leaders, who know the country very well and who will help to give us a unique insight into its history, customs and culture and get us that bit closer to the local people. They also ensure that our customers are aware of the cultural norms that should be observed, dress code, gestures, etc. Our tour leaders are trained by us in the importance of responsible tourism with guidance given on how they can make a difference.

As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
