Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
During this tour you will get to visit Udawalawe National Park. The total area of Udawalawe National Park is almost 31,000 hectares and this makes the park one of the most expansive parks in the island. The park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River, as well as to protect the catchment of the reservoir. Protected by The Department of Wildlife Conservation which conserves the Biodiversity of Sri Lanka. The Uga Ulagalla Resort has it's own organic paddy field and traditional Sri Lankan rice harvesting methods, as well as offering unique dining experiences celebrating this local cuisine.
A highlight for all the family is the Junior Ranger Program which has been designed to teach curious minds about nature, wildlife and the environment in a fun and engaging way. The children head out on an exciting journey of natural discovery. Some of the activities include identifying animals and birds, sketching favorite creatures, understanding the importance of eco-systems and threats to wild life, visiting our organic garden to learn about eating healthily and sustainably, and looking out for wild footprints and animal tracks.
Kalu's Hideaway prides itself on working as hard as it can be to promote itself as an eco-resort.
At Kalus Hideaway they try to use their own organic products as much as possible where necessary. They focus on being a plastic free resort, being 90% plastic free and working on improving in all areas from single use to eco-alternatives. Working on the reduction of environmental pollutants. Resource conservation and energy conservation. Sustainable use of natural resources. Use of recycled resources (promoting the 4Rs). A simplified waste treatment and disposal system.
The Elephant Transit home is supported by the Born Free Foundation, this complex is a halfway house for orphaned elephants. After rehabilitation, the elephants are released back into the wild, many into the Uda Walawe National Park. Although you can’t get up close and personal with the elephants, seeing them at feeding time (from a viewing platform) is still a lot of fun. Elephants here are not normally chained at night (unlike at other elephant 'orphanages') in Sri Lanka. Over 100 elephants have been rehabilitated at the Elephant Transit Home and subsequently released into the wild.

This is easily one of our favorites! Located in the rural elephant country of Sigiriya, today, the Diyakepilla Primary School has 20 children, all between the ages of 5 and 12 years. At the time of the discovery of this school in the year 2002, all students were housed in a small shed with thatched roof, without any of the essential items that a school should have for children. The poor dilapidated condition of the hut and the lack of essential resources had made it very difficult for the teachers to continue running this school and provide education to the children of the village as they were not receiving the assistance they needed from the government authorities. Since its’ discovery in the year 2002. Whilst the Government eventually came through with building a single story hall for the school. Our ground agent made arrangements to partition the hall, fund the furnishing, establish a library, music equipment, solar panels for the generation of electricity, supply of pipe borne water with an overhead tank and water taps, toilets, playground and equipment and a supply of stationary that is replenished as often as possible. The school remains a work in progress and we continue to support this project with the help of our guests. We encourage our guests to pay a visit to this Diyakepilla Village and possibly take with them some stationary items and snacks for the children and spend some time with them. It is an excellent experience for families with young children!
As most of our guests spend the first or the last couple of nights of their vacation in Negombo area, it's great opportunity to explore the life of the fishing village in Negombo. You start with a tour of the city by road, visiting the city and the fish markets. As the fishermen go out to the sea in the night and their boats are free in the afternoon, they became the perfect mode of transport for our guests to explore the Dutch canals and the local life as well as the wild life. The boats take you to a clearing in the lagoon just before the sunset, where cocktails are served to the guests. This experience provides an additional income to the fishermen who let us use their boats. Tried and tested by our ground agents and previous guests this experience multiple times, great memories are guaranteed!
