Planet
The Fair Trade City of Drakenstein's campaign unites the residents towards one course, a course that will boost environmental sustainability, the creation of jobs and supporting local businesses. It is this commitment to a common message and the choices of each individual that changes the lives of small producers and the community. As an agricultural town, the local municipality has actively implemented tourism experiences that are eco-friendly and environmentally conscious. They are intentional in giving exposure to sustainable local small businesses operating in the Drakenstein area by giving them access to opportunities and markets through campaigns and skills development for businesses to ensure sustainability. Communities that respect the environment and are encouraged to plant vegetable gardens and manage water. One of our tours we offer takes visitors to explore the valley on foot and learn about olives, wine, buchu and about themselves. Our welcome gifts to our guests are made with recycled material supporting a local women-owned small business that recycles wastes.
People
With at least 50% unemployment amongst youth in South Africa, this community hub works alongside local government departments to bring services to struggling youth in the Cape Winelands. Through school camps, they build confidence and help shape their futures. You will be part of incredible community heroes who support, train and help prepare them for decent jobs in radio and multimedia in order to support themselves. The community radio station has become a voice of hope for the people of Paarl. Working hand in hand with the local municipality, thousands of young people have been served by the project and given opportunities that they would otherwise not have been given. As a social enterprise, they have voiced the needs and been instrumental in creating employment for the Drakenstein community. This community radio station of 25 years established by a few fearless community leaders has become an open door to locals where they share their collective struggles but also celebrate the solutions to problems.
