An integral part of Kenya’s Rift Valley lake system with Lake Elmenteita lying between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru. This landscape is part of Kenya’s Natural Heritage of rich biodiversity as a conservation area in Kenya. It is part of the World Heritage site, a Ramsar International site and Important Bird and biodiversity area (IBA). The Soysambu conservancy has a 10-bed Safari tented accommodation that blends into the environment and runs on solar energy using energy-efficient light bulbs. The food is 100% locally sourced and caters to vegans and vegetarians. Most of the food is seasonal. Food waste is used as manure for trees.

Environment & Widlife

Soysambu Conservancy aims to secure habitat for wildlife conservation. The main objective is to ensure that all activities undertaken in the conservancy do not compromise species biodiversity. Through education, outreach and by developing science-based solutions to guide conservation actions for the benefit of nature and human welfare. Management of wildlife in a closed ecosystem, such as Soysambu, is of paramount importance. The Field Study and Research Department provides timely and relevant information that helps make decisions regarding wildlife. Continuous research and monitoring of key species ensures informed decisions on habitats and wildlife species are made to secure habitats and conserve the environment.

People

Local Economy

One of the main objectives are to expand neighbouring community interaction, including perimeter fencing to reduce human-wildlife conflict. There are two schools on the Estate and the goal is to also increase donor contributions and establish an endowment fund to facilitate the Community Partnership and Education programme. Tourism activities locally and internationally helps this mission to improve their educational outcomes. Levels of conservation awareness are low in most communities. There is a poor understanding of what Soysambu represents and is trying to achieve, but through the educational workshops, young people get a better understanding on the environment. Sponsored by the Constituency Development Fund (C.D.F) Project and Soysambu Conservancy, a local dispensary provides essential medicines and medical services for about 6,000 people all over the region, especially women and children who walk a long distance to get medical treatment.

Employment, inclusivity and diversity

The conservancy employs local people within the conservancy. 3 women and 5 men. Guests from all backgrounds are welcome who want to impact the people, environment and animals in this 46 000 acre area of conservation in Kenya.
