Ground transfers use shared local transport or efficient private vehicles for small groups, optimizing occupancy and efficiency. The itinerary prioritizes human-powered activities such as hiking (one full day in Samaria Gorge), extensive walking city and food tours (Athens and Santorini), and opportunities for swimming and snorkeling, all of which directly lower carbon impact during activity days. Travelers receive advice and are encouraged to minimize their own carbon footprint by using public transport options, choosing trains over domestic flights where practical, and supporting local, seasonal food that often appears on the menu, particularly during food tours in Athens and Santorini. Vegan and vegetarian options are available and promoted. The focus on locally sourced food and experiences further supports a lower-carbon travel model.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Our accommodations are primarily local hotels, many of which have adopted environmentally friendly practices such as reducing single-use plastic, using energy-efficient lighting, and engaging in recycling programs. In Crete, accommodation options are often involved in biodiversity protection and water-saving programs, such as rainwater harvesting—important in island regions affected by drought. The trip includes visits to major natural sites such as the Samaria Gorge, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which contributes with entry fees directly funding conservation and park maintenance. Guided hiking and boat trips, such as the exploration of Polyegos and Kleftiko, are conducted by local experts who actively educate travelers on the importance of preserving marine and terrestrial habitats—snorkeling guides emphasize not disturbing sea life or collecting coral/rocks. Additionally, travelers are provided with guidance on how to travel responsibly (e.g., minimizing waste and not feeding wildlife). Travelers are immersed in authentic local markets, artisan food shops, and family-run taverns—especially prominent on the Athens and Santorini food tours as well as the olive oil mill visit in Crete—directly supporting small businesses and traditional crafts. Excursions such as the jeep safari and boat trips are operated by local enterprises well-rooted in their respective regions. By emphasizing regional gastronomy and cultural heritage, the itinerary distributes economic benefits across a range of community stakeholders, from rural villages on Crete to urban neighborhoods in Athens.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

At least 90 percent of on-the-ground staff, including guides and drivers, are Greek nationals, with many coming from the small communities visited. Where possible, we partner with organizations or operators that provide stable incomes to women and marginalized groups, such as through locally managed culinary experiences and artisan markets. All guides are paid at or above Greece's official minimum wage, and the selection of partners gives priority to those embodying inclusivity and diversity—regardless of race, gender, or orientation. The entire itinerary is LGBTQ+ friendly and efforts are made to accommodate travelers with limited mobility, especially in city centers and key attractions with elevator or ramp access. While some active components (e.g., Samaria Gorge) may be challenging, alternative accessible activities are available upon request.
