Measuring emissions: This trip covers approximately 520km overland, generating around 50.8kg of CO2—equivalent to about 3.34 trees’ worth of carbon absorption. While we do not endorse offsetting alone as a complete solution, we purchase carbon removal on behalf of all of our clients.

Use of renewable energy: Morgan’s Rock uses solar panels to heat bath water, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and contributing to lower operational emissions.

Minimising plastics & transport footprint: Hotel Plaza Colon and Hotel San Simian both offer refillable water stations, limiting single-use plastic waste. The trip includes human-powered activities—such as hiking volcano trails or kayaking on Lake Nicaragua—helping reduce vehicle emissions.

Local & seasonal cuisine: Accommodations like Hotel Plaza Colon prioritise purchasing local produce, which supports the community and reduces food miles. Vegetarian and vegan options can be arranged, further lowering the trip’s carbon footprint.

Protected Habitats & Reforestation: Morgan’s Rock is located on a 4,446-acre property, with 1,976 acres of conserved primary forest and over 2,400 acres replanted with more than 1.5 million trees. This extensive reforestation helps restore habitats for endangered species and actively contributes to biodiversity.

Conservation initiatives: By visiting natural reserves such as Mombacho Volcano, Masaya Volcano, and Apoyo Lagoon, travelers help fund conservation efforts through park entrance fees. Hotel Plaza Colon also sponsors an environmental education program in a local school near Granada and has provided 1,000 trees to be planted at the foot of Mombacho Volcano.

Reduced plastic & waste: Many of the featured properties have clear strategies for recycling, reducing disposable plastics, and conserving water. This helps to protect local ecosystems from pollution.

The trip also encourages visits to markets, cooperatives, and community-run projects, creating income opportunities for artisans and farmers.

Local hiring: Your ground operator works with guides, drivers, and hospitality staff from nearby villages, ensuring that a high percentage of employees are Nicaraguan. This not only boosts local employment but also helps preserve cultural traditions and community pride.

Fair wages & social commitments: Staff are paid at least the legal minimum wage, with many properties offering above-standard benefits. Hotel Plaza Colon, for instance, sells pre-made backpacks with school supplies, which visitors can purchase and donate to the local school—empowering education initiatives.
