Planet

Setting sail on the maritime journey of the Portuguese discoverers for the "Portuguese Spice Route" cooking vacation presents a remarkable and distinctive chance for travelers with a keen interest in responsible and sustainable tourism.

Celebrating Culinary Heritage: By tracing the footsteps of the Portuguese explorers along the renowned spice route, participants not only can immerse themselves in the diverse and enticing flavours of distant lands but also to uncover the rich culinary heritage of Portugal.

Embracing Sustainable Practices: Our journey begins with sourcing ingredients from the local village market conveniently situated near the villa. We prioritise sourcing locally grown produce, including vegetables, honey, and nuts. In my own garden, I grow a modest selection of vegetables, most of our herbs, lemons, and limes. We use herbs like lemongrass and rosemary from our garden to make herbal teas. I’m continually expanding our vegetable patch and producing our own compost. Our garden boasts a diverse range of recently planted fruit trees including almond, pomegranate, apple, pear, orange, lemon, peach, and lime. Black and red berry bushes were planted this year. Fruit trees and berry bushes recently planted enhance biodiversity, while a beehive strategically placed near our garden aids in pollination, reflecting our commitment to sustainability.

Eco-Friendly Accommodations: The trip includes stays in accommodations actively contributing to environmental restoration efforts. From bird boxes to pollinator-friendly plants, these initiatives not only enhance the local ecosystem but also offer guests opportunities to connect with nature.

Promoting Biodiversity: In partnership with Vita Nativa, an association dedicated to conservation projects in the Algarve, our trip supports bird conservation efforts. Nesting boxes installed onsite provide habitats for a variety of bird species, promoting biodiversity and ecosystem health.

Championing Conservation: Through annual contributions to Vita Nativa, our journey directly aids environmental conservation endeavours in the Algarve. Additionally, all meals served during the trip are vegetarian, reducing the environmental impact associated with food production. Travelers also have the option to support Vita Nativa's bird project, furthering awareness and fostering biodiversity.

People

The " Portuguese Spice Route” trip offers an exceptional experience for travelers seeking sustainable and responsible tourism, with a focus on supporting the local economy and fostering inclusivity and diversity. Here's how:

Local Economy: We prioritise maximising local economic opportunities by supporting the local community by purchasing local products from the market, honey from local beekeepers and supporting local businesses. Additionally, we feature Portuguese-made towels and linen in our accommodations, supporting local textile industries.

Employment, Inclusivity, and Diversity: We are committed to employing individuals from the local community, ensuring that a significant portion of our team hails from the country and resides locally. From our pool cleaner to our villa cleaning team and administrative staff, we prioritise hiring locals. Our service providers, including art and yoga tutors, are also native residents, fostering a sense of inclusivity and diversity within our operations. We adhere to fair labour practices by ensuring that all staff members receive at least the minimum wage, promoting equitable compensation for their contributions.

LGBTQ+ Friendly: Our trip is inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly, welcoming travelers of all identities with open arms. We strive to create a welcoming and affirming environment where everyone feels respected and valued.
