CARBON REDUCTIONOur Chachapoyas and Gocta Falls itinerary makes a difference in several important ways. First, our program is largely based on nightly homestays, where you’ll spend the night with local families instead of hotels. This reduces your carbon footprint and directly supports local families.
Meals are made with locally grown ingredients that comes from family-run farms, especially when you eat with families. This further reduces your carbon footprint and helps to preserve genetic diversity.
Transportation is planned to avoid unnecessary trips and backtracking. If possible, shared or group transfers are used instead of private.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
In addition, we take the following steps to protect the environment in Chachapoyas:
Travelers are asked to bring a refillable water bottle to reduce waste, reusable utensils and flatware are used at meals. Water refills are available at each meal.
When hiking, we follow only established trails, with the goal of protecting flora, minimizing erosion, and preventing environmental destruction.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYOur Chachapoyas and Gocta Falls itinerary makes a difference for people in several important ways. Elements of community-based tourism, including homestays, weaving & ceramics workshops provide direct income sources for local families. We ensure that participating families are fairly and directly compensated, and ensure that travelers respect the family, their home, and their community.
Our ultimate goal is that locals benefit from international tourism. This includes getting our clients off the beaten path, where the economic benefits of tourism are normally much lower, supporting and honoring traditions, promoting the use of Quechua and respect for the language, and creating/participating in beneficial community projects.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Many components of this itinerary are led by local experts, such as master weavers and potters. This provides support for and the continued practice of traditional activities.
Visits to archeological sites and hikes to natural areas such as Gocta Falls are led by local guides, providing employment and income to an area of Peru that receives relatively little international tourism.
