Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Environmental sustainability is a core principle of this adventure. Highland Base, nestled in the pristine Kerlingarfjöll region, embodies responsible tourism with its commitment to minimising ecological impact.

The base operates using sustainable construction practices, such as eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient systems, and it adheres to BREEAM standards for sustainable development.

Our trip encourages low-carbon transportation options, such as shared vehicles and hiking, to further reduce the overall environmental footprint. This walking vacation is designed to have a minimal impact on the environment, local residents, and communities in the areas we explore. We adhere to a strict 'leave no trace' approach, ensuring we properly dispose of all waste and remain mindful of wildlife and natural surroundings. Our goal is to preserve the pristine beauty of the regions we visit, maintaining a respectful presence throughout the journey.

By visiting protected areas such as Þingvellir National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and supporting conservation efforts, this journey contributes to preserving Iceland’s unique landscapes for future generations.

People

This Icelandic adventure is designed to support the local economy by focusing on accommodations that are locally owned and operated, such as Highland Base.

Guests will be guided by locals who are passionate about sharing the natural beauty and cultural history of the region. We exclusively hire local staff, and unlike many other operators, we believe that sending a foreign Tour Leader to accompany your trip is both an unnecessary expense for you and an added strain on our carbon footprint. We trust that locals are the best guides!

This is mutually beneficial in that the community benefits from employment opportunities, whilst clients gain an insight into the country from staff with valuable local expertise.

We prioritise visiting local businesses that reflect the authentic spirit of Iceland. For example, on day 7, we visit Friðheimar Greenhouse Farm, where you’ll enjoy a light lunch made from fresh produce grown on-site, including tomato soup, sandwiches, and unique tomato-based drinks.
