CARBON REDUCTION

The Cultural & Adventure Amazon Tour includes only one domestic flight, from Quito to Coca, reducing overall air travel. Once in the Amazon, all transfers are conducted by motorized canoe and on foot, avoiding carbon-intensive road transport and minimizing emissions.

Guests begin their journey in Quito, staying at Illa Experience Hotel, which emphasizes the use of seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. By working with nearby vendors and reducing reliance on industrial supply chains, the hotel lowers the carbon footprint associated with food transport.

In the Amazon, the itinerary includes several low-impact, human-powered activities, such as guided hikes, canoe rides, and a sunset kayaking excursion on the Napo River. These forms of transportation avoid fossil fuel use and promote immersive, low-emission exploration of the rainforest.

Meals in the Amazon region (Days 3 to 7) are prepared at the Napo Wildlife Center, avoiding the need to transport food from outside the area.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

In Quito, Illa Experience Hotel contributes to urban environmental responsibility by integrating green space and native plants into its design, supported by a tiered irrigation system that reduces water waste. The hotel also limits plastic use and promotes low-impact hospitality practices.

The core of the tour takes place in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve, one of the planet’s richest biodiversity hotspots. Guests explore the rainforest with local guides via canoe paddling, canopy tower birdwatching, and walking trails such as Tiputini. These experiences are designed to be both educational and minimally disruptive to wildlife.

Visitors also witness a natural spectacle at Ecuador’s most active parrot clay lick, and take part in a visit to the Kuri Muyu Interpretation Center, where conservation and indigenous culture intersect.

All Amazon-based activities are operated by the Añangu Kichwa community, which has adopted sustainable tourism as a tool for ecosystem protection and environmental awareness.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Guests begin and end their journey in Quito, staying at Illa Experience Hotel, a 100% Ecuadorian-owned property located in San Marcos, a historic neighborhood. The hotel offers cultural experiences with local artists and artisans, strengthening the local creative economy.

The Amazon portion of the tour is hosted at the Napo Wildlife Center, which is owned and operated by the Añangu Kichwa community. All services, accommodation, guiding, meals, and transport are delivered by residents, ensuring that economic benefits stay within the community.

A visit to the Kuri Muyu Interpretation Center introduces guests to traditional crafts, stories, and rituals led by women of the community. This initiative creates stable, dignified income for female artisans and supports the transmission of cultural knowledge.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

At Illa Experience Hotel, all staff are Ecuadorian, and the hotel supports the NESTS Project, a professional training initiative that prepares young Ecuadorians to develop careers in gastronomy and hospitality through mentorship, accommodation, and hands-on learning. This program contributes to the development of sustainable tourism practices rooted in local leadership.

During the Amazon segment, the tour is run entirely by Añangu Kichwa community members, including naturalist guides, boat operators, and hospitality staff. These roles provide long-term, community-based employment rooted in cultural and environmental stewardship.

Guests are invited to participate in Kichwa traditions, including the guayusa ritual and dream interpretation, which are led by community elders. These activities support cultural preservation and respectful exchange.

While excursions require a basic level of physical mobility, some experiences may be adapted to guests' needs with advanced coordination. Although the tour does not include a formal diversity policy, it reflects a strong commitment to local inclusion and community empowerment.
