1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The sights, sounds and colours of India, and returning each nioght to our lovely ship.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Table hop each night at dinner and meet your interesting fellow travelers.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
We cointributed, in a small way, to the economies of each place, and envinromentally by minimising the use of plastics and following ship guidelines to reduce our impact.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Historic Hoogly river cruise - was an exceptional experience in every way, from the ship to the food to the superlative service, and expert guiding and onboard entertainment. A perfectly calm way to see historic West Bengal and some of India's beauty.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
The ship's managers recognise that the river is their lifeline. The river provides, sustains and nourishes. The cruise team has a deep, abiding love for and gratitude towards the river and they want it to flow eternally. And so they’ve put several measures in place in order to preserve the waters, wildlife and culture of the rivers they sail on.Clean River
We will eliminate single-use plastic wherever possible.
We have sewage treatment and water treatment plants on every ship.
Clean Fuel
Our air conditioning units, fans, lights, and kitchens run on solar power wherever and whenever possible.
We use shore electricity to reduce consumption of fuel.
We use Xtra green fuel to reduce carbon emissions and particulate matter, and increase fuel efficiency.
Go Natural
Our sailing is designed mindfully to protect the river’s inhabitants.
We use all natural and/or organic products in rooms and kitchens.
We have tie ups with local NGOs and assist with their efforts to preserve wildlife, especially in the Sunderbans.
People
The ship's owners, managers and crew are all Indian and have been running these ships for many years. They know the river, the countryside and the villages. The vessels are all custom built in India, reviving an industry and providing important work for the shipyards of Bengal, and some much needed high quality employment in the engineering sector.
We visit some off the beaten communities that otherwise get little if any of the financial benefit that tourism can bring such as the textile village of Shantipur which is famous for handloom sarees and hand-woven fabrics, and the village of Bali where we interact with and hopefully buy from the villagers engaged in creating handicrafts
Go Local
We focus on world and regional cuisine with local produce.
We promote local crafts and products to highlight the cultures and enhance livelihoods along the river.
We use local forms of transport, hiring local people and working on skill development wherever possible.
