CARBON REDUCTION

This itinerary is designed around three core regions, Quito, the Andean highlands and the Amazon, with multiple nights in each location to reduce repeated transfers and unnecessary overland travel. By spending extended time in fewer places, the journey encourages slower exploration rather than high-frequency movement between destinations.

While a domestic flight is required to access the Amazon due to geography and limited road alternatives, onward exploration takes place primarily by river navigation. Traveling by boat along the Napo River reduces the need for additional road infrastructure in sensitive rainforest environments and concentrates activities within a defined area rather than dispersing impact across multiple sites.

Several activities are human-powered or low-impact in nature, including guided hikes in the Andes, forest walks in the Amazon and canoe excursions to Pañacocha Lake. Food experiences throughout the itinerary highlight regional ingredients, from Andean produce to Amazonian cuisine, supporting shorter supply chains and reducing reliance on imported goods. Accommodation partners are selected for their integration within their landscapes and publicly stated sustainability commitments, encouraging lower-impact operations in ecologically sensitive regions.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, and this journey includes time in ecosystems of global ecological importance. In the Andes, your stay at a historic working hacienda includes access to a condor conservation initiative focused on protecting one of the country’s most emblematic and threatened bird species. Educational visits provide insight into habitat preservation and the ecological importance of the high-altitude páramo landscape.

In the Amazon, exploration takes place within one of the planet’s most biologically rich regions. Excursions to parrot clay licks, blackwater lagoons and nocturnal forest habitats are guided by experienced naturalists and follow observational-only wildlife principles. Activities are structured to minimise disturbance and avoid direct interaction with animals.

A visit to a Kichwa community includes learning about locally led conservation initiatives, including turtle protection projects. Entrance fees, guided services and community-hosted visits contribute to the economic viability of conservation-linked tourism. Throughout the trip, wildlife encounters prioritise education, habitat respect and responsible viewing practices in both Andean and Amazonian environments.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This itinerary prioritises locally rooted accommodation and regionally delivered experiences in Quito, the Andes and the Amazon. Guided tours in Quito’s historic center are led by locally based guides, and meals included in the programme take place in independent restaurants that highlight Ecuadorian cuisine and cacao heritage.

In the Andean highlands, your stay at a historic working hacienda supports a rural property connected to agricultural production and craft traditions. Activities such as visits to the embroidery workshop, cheese production and horseback riding are facilitated on-site, helping generate income linked to traditional skills and land-based livelihoods.

In the Amazon, river guides, naturalists and community hosts are based within the region. The visit to a Kichwa women’s association supports handicraft production and community-led initiatives. By engaging with locally delivered guiding, agricultural experiences and indigenous-led visits, the itinerary helps ensure tourism spending circulates within the regions visited rather than relying solely on externally managed services.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

We work with locally based guides, drivers, naturalists and hospitality teams across all regions of this journey. By partnering with Ecuadorian-operated suppliers and community hosts, the trip supports employment connected to conservation, agriculture, guiding and hospitality.

The condor conservation initiative in the Andes and the Kichwa women’s community visit in the Amazon create income-generating opportunities linked to environmental stewardship and cultural preservation. These experiences support participation from rural and indigenous communities whose livelihoods are closely connected to land and biodiversity.

The itinerary is privately arranged and adaptable in pace, allowing flexibility where possible. It welcomes travelers from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ guests, and is designed around respectful cross-cultural exchange. By prioritising local expertise and community-hosted experiences, the journey supports inclusive tourism practices while encouraging meaningful engagement with Ecuador’s cultural and ecological heritage.
