Travel guides
There's much more to Bali than just beaches and sunshine, as our travel guide explores.
Our Indonesia travel guide aims to point responsible travelers in the right direction when it comes to what we rate & what we don’t.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONBali is often experienced quickly and superficially. This journey is designed to do the opposite. We move more slowly, stay longer in fewer places, and cut out unnecessary backtracking, reducing both emissions and the pressure that comes with over-tourism.
Where possible, we explore on foot or by bicycle, through villages, rice fields, and local areas, rather than relying on constant vehicle transfers. When transport is needed, routes are planned efficiently to avoid wasted journeys, a key issue on an island where traffic and short distances can quickly increase environmental impact.
Small group sizes (maximum 15 people) allow us to stay flexible and low-impact, avoiding the footprint of large-scale tourism. We also encourage travelers to take responsibility for their own impact by reducing waste, carrying reusables, and being conscious of how they move through the island.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Bali’s landscapes, consisting of rice terraces, waterfalls, coastlines, and volcanic terrain, are not untouched environments. Balinese people live, work, and are deeply connected to local culture and spirituality. This trip is designed to engage with those spaces without overwhelming them.
We take a consistent, practical approach: small groups, no unnecessary infrastructure, and a strict ‘leave no trace’ mindset across natural and cultural sites. Whether that’s by walking through agricultural land or visiting temples and water sites, respect comes first.
Balinese guides provide context on how land, religion, and daily life are interconnected in Bali, from irrigation systems to temple practices and shift the focus from passive sightseeing to a deeper understanding.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYTourism in Bali is everywhere, but it doesn’t always benefit everyone equally. This tour is built to keep money from tourism local.
We work directly with Balinese guides, drivers, small hotels, and independent restaurants to avoid international chains and extractive supply chains. You’ll eat locally, stay locally, and engage with businesses that are part of the community, not built around tourists.
Experiences are grounded in real places, villages, markets, and family-run spaces, not curated backdrops. This tour contributes directly to livelihoods, rather than feeding into mass tourism systems that often bypass local people.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
This is a Balinese-led experience. The people guiding you through Bali aren’t performing a version of their culture, they’re living it.
You’ll engage with local perspectives on religion, daily life, and the realities of living in one of the world’s most visited destinations. That includes the tensions between tradition and tourism, preservation and development. These conversations will not be filtered or simplified.
Respect is non-negotiable. Bali is deeply spiritual, and travelers are expected to engage with that context properly, especially when visiting temples and community spaces. Guidance is clear, and group sizes are kept small to ensure interactions remain appropriate and non-intrusive.
