Best time to visit Bali

Bali's proximity to the equator creates balanced, year-round temperatures with a rainy season from Oct to May and the dry season on the flip side.
Sandwiched between the island's seasonal split you'll find the best time to visit Bali is June or Sept as it's drier, not so humid, and European kids haven't broken up from school. Australians break up for their winter vacations the last week of June and first two weeks of July – you have been warned. Although it rains in Jan-April and Oct-Nov it's still a great time of year to visit as prices are down, there are fewer crowds and it's usually bright in the morning followed by an afternoon downpour, to freshen things up a bit.

Bali, month by month

Rains tend to fall in the afternoon, pretty much every day, from January to April and during October and November. This won't usually impact on low level outdoor activities although some volcano trails and access roads may become impassable and closed for safety reasons. The best conditions for water visibility in Bali are during October and November, when the weather is generally calm, and during the start of the south east monsoon, which extends from May to July. Either side of the rainy and summer seasons, in May, June and September, you'll find the best time to visit Bali for drier, less humid, conditions matched by some good deals on accommodation and fewer crowds. August is probably not the best month to go to Bali as although dry and sunny days are at a premium so are accommodation prices; so, if you can, wait another month and visit in September. Bali during December and January can get crowded with vacationing Antipodeans as Aussie and NZ schools take a break from November through to February. Finally, if you're thinking of heading over to Bali's neighbouring island of Lombok, to see Mt Rinjani, then be aware that the national park usually closes from January to March.

What happens when in Bali

Jeremy Kwan, from our supplier Intrepid Travel, shares his best time to go snorkelling in Bali, and why: “The dry season, from April to October, is the best time to go snorkelling in Bali, especially around Menjangan Island. Water clarity is much better and you can expect to see numerous types of nudibranchs, trevallies, fusiliers, flounders, razor fish, catfish and clown fish.”

Nyepi – the Day of Silence

This Hindu celebration and public vacation is held the day before Balinese New Year. Nyepi consists of fasting, meditation and being as quiet as possible with airports closing and TV stations switching off as the whole island observes 24hrs of self-reflection. The day before Nyepi is quite the opposite as unmarried men, especially in the villages, parade demonic effigies, known as Ogoh-Ogoh, as well as undertaking mock fights and generally making as much noise as possible to scare away the evil spirits before burning the Ogoh-Ogoh as the Day of Silence begins at 6am.
