CARBON REDUCTION

Hemingways Mara, the first camp in this itinerary has fully solar-powered electricity and hot water with backup generator.
Kalepo Camp, the second camp in this itinerary, located in Northern Kenya is fully solar-powered, operating as a self-sustaining off-grid camp using solar energy for electricity, hot water, and cooking.
At both camps in this itinerary it is possible to undertake activities without the use of a vehicle. At Hemingways Mara this includes walking safaris and at Kalepo Camp they actually don't conduct any game drives and most of the activities include an element of walking.

Vegetarian and vegan meals available.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The Kalepo Community Conservancy is the custodian of over 450,000 acres of land in northern Kenya. Kalepo Camp sits at the heart of this landscape and together, the camp and the conservancy operate as a genuine partnership, blending responsible tourism with community stewardship to protect land, wildlife, and Samburu culture. Kalepo Camp contributes to many initiates to protect this area and its wildlife however one worth mentioning is the Kalepo Elephant Project. Samburu warriors are employed as Elephant Guardians, monitoring, protecting, and researching northern Kenya's elephant population. The aim is to reduce human-wildlife conflict as well as to strength local ownership of conservation.

LOCAL ECONOMY
Kalepo Camp contributes around $70,000 per annum to supporting the next generation of Samburu who call the area home. Around 30,000 people split across many smaller villages live in the 450,000 acre conversancy. This is done by supporting preschools and primary schools within Kalepo Conservancy with teacher incentives, daily meals, learning materials, and mentorship, investing in the classrooms, equipment, and infrastructure.

Kalepo Camp is key in providing around $60,000 per annum to support community dispensaries and mobile clinics that serve over 30,000 people. This includes, funding medical supplies, staff, and outreach services including maternal health and family planning.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Women have limited opportunities at independence, education and training in traditional Samburu culture. Kalepo Camp contributes around $80,000 per annum to empowering Samburu women. This is done through a number of different opportunities they provide to women including agave farming, grass seed initiatives, impala release boma management, building climate-resilient livelihoods and financial independence while supporting species reintroduction across the conservancy.
