CARBON REDUCTION

This itinerary reduces internal emissions by using the scenic train from Nanuoya to Ella instead of a long road transfer. Shared jeep safaris in Wilpattu and shared boat safaris in Gal Oya also lower emissions per person compared with private vehicles. Walking and cycling at Ulagalla, Ella and Galle further reduce the need for short transfers.

Uga Ulagalla operates one of Sri Lanka’s largest solar farms for a boutique property and uses biogas and a water treatment plant to reduce grid demand. 98 Acres Resort & Spa uses recycled railway sleepers, local stone and thatch, and runs electric buggies instead of conventional vehicles. Niva Dhigali has a Sustainability Management Plan, a glass bottling plant to eliminate single use plastic water bottles, and Green Globe certification with targets to reduce CO2 emissions, water use and waste.

Food sourcing also reduces carbon impact. Gal Oya Lodge sources most ingredients from within 20km and runs its own organic farm. Ulagalla and 98 Acres use local produce and gardens, while Niva Dhigali offers vegetarian and often vegan options at every meal.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

Environmental standards across the accommodations are strong. Leopard Trails uses solar power, avoids single use plastics, and removes all waste from the park for proper disposal. Gal Oya Lodge uses borehole water, solar heated water and energy saving lighting, and avoids municipal water supplies in a water stressed region. Ulagalla’s LEED certification reflects its renewable energy use, water treatment systems and sustainable construction.

Gal Oya Lodge hosts the Jim Edwards Wildlife Research Centre and supports the Wilderness and Wildlife Conservation Trust’s Patch Forest Project, providing land for long term monitoring of leopards, wild cats, birds and butterflies. Niva Dhigali has preserved over 80% of its original jungle, protects fruit bat roosts and native vegetation, and offers guided Jungle Walks to explain island biodiversity.

Park entry fees in Wilpattu and Gal Oya support protected area management. Galle Fort’s heritage fees contribute to conservation of the UNESCO site. Guests receive guidance on responsible wildlife viewing, including avoiding noise, keeping distance and never leaving vehicles except at designated points.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Most accommodations on this trip are locally owned or locally rooted. Villa Hundira is an independent property with an on site craft studio. Leopard Trails, Gal Oya Lodge and Uga Ulagalla are Sri Lankan operations. Villa Rosa and Galle Fort Hotel are independent. 98 Acres is part of a Sri Lankan tea group. Niva Dhigali employs a large Maldivian workforce.

Local sourcing is prioritised. Leopard Trails buys supplies from nearby producers and employs staff from surrounding villages. Gal Oya Lodge employs around 75% of its team from within 10km and contracts local craftsmen for construction and furniture. Villa Hundira’s Thimble project provides paid work and skills training for local women, with guest purchases directly supporting their income. Niva Dhigali sources 99% of its fish from local communities and works with the nearby island of Meedhoo on environmental initiatives.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Employment across the itinerary is strongly local. Uga Resorts hires Sri Lankan staff across its properties and follows GSTC and Travelife standards on labour, human rights and community engagement. Gal Oya Lodge’s Naturalist Training Programme offers fully funded six month courses for local school leavers, creating skilled jobs linked to conservation.

Several partners support marginalised groups. Villa Hundira’s Thimble project employs and trains women from nearby villages. Uga Resorts allocates a per room night CSR contribution to projects focused on water, wildlife and women. Gal Oya Lodge employs former poachers, providing alternative livelihoods that reduce pressure on wildlife.

The trip is LGBTQ+ friendly. It suits travelers with moderate mobility, though some elements, such as Sigiriya, Gal Oya walks, and hill country steps, require reasonable fitness. Adjustments can be made through room selection and pacing.
