Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTION

This self-guided cycling tour in Emilia-Romagna starts and ends in Ferrara, following trails through Ferrara Province and the Po Delta. It is, by its very nature, slow and sustainable, with guests cycling between 38-63km per day. This enables them to explore the territory in a way that produces zero carbon emissions - by bike. We also offer e-bikes on this tour, encouraging people who aren't experienced cyclists to travel the eco way, making sustainable tourism even more accessible.

With all of our tours, we encourage our guests to travel to and around Italy using buses and trains whenever possible. This itinerary starts and finishes in Ferrara, which is reachable by rail. Although luggage is transferred by a local provider during the vacation, guests complete the route itself by bike.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This cycling tour takes guests through the heart of the Po Delta’s UNESCO-listed wetlands, including the Valli di Comacchio lagoons and the narrow Argine degli Angeli cycling path.
This part of Italy is a biodiversity hotspot, home to over 370 bird species, including iconic pink flamingos.
The route also crosses traditional pastoral landscapes, raised embankments across wetlands and waterfront towns and villages.

We remind guests to practise Leave No Trace throughout their trip, especially when cycling through wetland areas and rural landscapes.
With regards to drinking water, we ask guests to bring refillable water bottles as well as a reusable shopping bag to avoid single-use plastic during their trip. We also ask guests to take any packaging away with them and be mindful of not dropping litter.
We have an in-house responsible tourism expert, who shares tips and advice with our guests in trip notes, blogs and newsletters. For example, on how to reduce their impact on the environment and wildlife, support responsible travel practices and respect the places and communities they pass through.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Accommodation on this tour includes a mix of small hotels, agriturismos, family-owned B&Bs and locally-run inns. They have been carefully selected based on a variety of criteria including their location, warm hospitality, good local food and connection to the area.
Only breakfast is included on this cycling tour, and guests are encouraged to buy lunches and snacks in local shops, and dine in restaurants or at their accommodation where available. The itinerary includes places such as Ferrara, Ostellato, Comacchio and Argenta, helping tourism spend reach local businesses, hosts and families along the route.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

All of our partners in Italy are locally employed and play an important role in contributing to the local economy. At home, we have a strict policy to pay all our own employees and team members a living wage and fair wage, with vacation entitlement. In the hiring process, we prioritise experience, qualifications and passion, emphasising that race, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality are not factors of consideration. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace based on skills and expertise. We also endeavour to support any guests with visible and non-visible disabilities or any special requirements, when possible.
