CARBON REDUCTION

This itinerary follows a continuous self-drive route from Vancouver to Calgary, avoiding domestic flights within Canada. Ferry crossings between the mainland, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island form part of the journey, reducing the need for additional air travel while allowing travelers to experience the changing landscapes of coastal British Columbia.

Many of the included experiences are low-impact ways of exploring Canada's natural environments. Cycling in Stanley Park, hiking in Wells Gray and Banff National Parks, wildlife viewing by boat and the gentle Athabasca River float all rely on human-powered or shared transport rather than high-emission activities.
Several accommodation providers have introduced measures to reduce their environmental footprint. Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, as part of Marriott International, participates in programmes to improve energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and minimise waste across its hotels.

Meals throughout the journey make it easy to choose vegetarian options, while the included dinners at West Coast Wilderness Lodge showcase produce from British Columbia, reducing food miles and supporting regional suppliers where possible.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The route passes through some of western Canada's most significant protected landscapes, including Wells Gray Provincial Park, Jasper National Park and Banff National Park. Park entry fees (although free for under 18s) help fund trail maintenance, habitat protection, visitor education and wildlife management.
Wildlife encounters are designed around observing animals behaving naturally rather than interacting with them. Whale watching in Johnstone Strait, bear viewing near Whistler and river safaris in Wells Gray are led by experienced local guides who follow established wildlife viewing regulations, helping minimise disturbance while educating visitors about local ecosystems.

Several of the accommodation providers have environmental policies in place. Delta Whistler Village Suites operates within Marriott International's sustainability framework, while Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre follows the same group-wide approach to reducing energy use, water consumption and waste.

Travelers receive guidance throughout the trip on responsible wildlife viewing, remaining on marked trails and respecting seasonal closures designed to protect sensitive habitats.

LOCAL ECONOMY
Although Vancouver and Whistler use internationally managed hotels, much of the itinerary supports independently owned accommodation, including West Coast Wilderness Lodge, Painter's Lodge and Alpine Meadows Resort. These smaller properties employ local staff and purchase goods and services from surrounding communities wherever possible.

The itinerary also supports numerous local businesses through guided activities, including wildlife cruises, rafting excursions, horseback riding, river safaris and bear viewing tours. Using local guides means visitors benefit from regional knowledge while tourism income stays within the communities visited.

The self-drive format naturally encourages travelers to stop in smaller towns, cafés, bakeries and independent businesses throughout British Columbia and Alberta, helping spread tourism spending beyond the country's main visitor centers.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Canada has strong employment and equality legislation, and the accommodation providers and activity operators featured on this itinerary operate inclusive workplaces that welcome staff and guests regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. The itinerary is suitable for LGBTQ+ travelers.

Local guides lead many of the included activities, sharing knowledge of wildlife, geology and regional history developed through years of experience working in these landscapes. Their expertise adds context to the journey while supporting skilled employment in tourism.

As this is an active itinerary featuring boat trips, rafting, horseback riding, glacier excursions and uneven walking trails, it is not generally suitable for travelers with limited mobility. Individual activities may be adaptable, and advice should be sought before booking.
