For whether you are traveling by train, wildlife watching in rainforests, or just blissing out at the beach.
Solo travel guide
Responsible Travel was built out of a love of solo travel, and we want to share the joy of it with you.

Vacation information

Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modeled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and help with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, traveling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. For those with limited time, a small group tour will save valuable time in planning, and on vacation.
Dietary requirements:
We can cater for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTION

The itinerary avoids all domestic flights and uses overland transport only. All internal travel is conducted via shared vehicles, significantly reducing the carbon footprint compared to internal air travel. All transfers and excursions are conducted in shared, air-conditioned vehicles appropriate to group size, maximizing occupancy and reducing CO? emissions per person.

The programme uses small-scale, nature-focused and low-density properties such as The Wallawwa (Negombo), Jetwing Vil Uyana (Sigiriya), Simpsons Forest (Kandy region), Glenross Living (Kalutara) and Aavya Cove Villas (Balapitiya). These properties are designed around natural landscapes and emphasize passive cooling, open-air design and low-impact architecture, which reduces reliance on intensive air-conditioning and energy consumption.

Sri Lankan cuisine naturally includes a wide variety of vegetarian and vegan options such as rice and curry, vegetable dishes, coconut-based meals and farm-to-table lunches. The itinerary specifically highlights locally sourced Sri Lankan meals and customizable dining experiences that can easily cater to vegetarian and vegan dietary requirements. Several meals are hosted on-site using garden and estate produce (e.g. bio vegetable gardens and farm-to-table dining), reducing transport emissions associated with food supply chains. The itinerary also minimizes internal flights and relies solely on overland transport in air-conditioned shared vehicles. A high proportion of food is locally sourced and seasonal.

The programme includes several low-carbon activities:

§ Scenic cycling trail (Day 6)

§ Nature trekking (Day 5)

§ Kayaking in mangrove ecosystems (Day 8)

§ Optional village bicycle trail (Day 4)

ENVIRONEMNT AND WILDLIFE

The trip includes an experienced local tour leader throughout and specialist local guides at major sites. Wildlife experiences such as Minneriya National Park safaris include naturalist guides, and the primate experience in Polonnaruwa is hosted by conservation researchers with decades of field expertise.

The selected accommodations operate in natural settings (tea estates, forest estates, lagoon and coastal environments) and incorporate environmentally sensitive practices such as:

§ Bio vegetable gardens and locally grown produce (Simpsons Forest)

§ Low-density villa-style accommodation integrated into natural landscapes

§ Outdoor dining and natural ventilation to reduce energy use

§ Reduced single-use plastic through curated dining and in-house hospitality

§ Waste reduction through controlled, small-group dining experiences

These practices help lower pollution, water usage and environmental disturbance in sensitive areas.

Several properties are located within restored or conserved natural environments. Jetwing Vil Uyana is situated within a wetland and paddy ecosystem restoration concept, while Simpsons Forest is part of a 100-acre tea and clove estate with preserved forest areas and nature trails. The programme also includes stays surrounded by mangroves, tea gardens and forest landscapes, supporting habitat conservation and biodiversity.

The itinerary includes entry to protected and heritage areas such as Minneriya National Park for a wildlife game drive and visits within the Cultural Triangle (e.g. Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya Sanctuary). Entrance fees to sites mentioned in the itinerary are included in the package price.

The Polonnaruwa primate experience is hosted by researchers connected to the Smithsonian Primate Research Center, contributing to long-term primate conservation and ecological research. Additionally, the safari in Minneriya National Park supports protected area conservation through park entry fees and the use of licensed naturalist guides. Kayaking through mangrove ecosystems on the Bentota River is conducted in a low-impact manner that promotes awareness of fragile wetland habitats.

LOCAL EMPLOYMENT

The trip is fully operated within Sri Lanka using local chauffeurs, guides, naturalists, hotel staff, farmers, estate workers and community hosts. The majority (estimated over 90%) of operational staff and partners are Sri Lankan, with many recruited from local communities in each destination.

The accommodation mix includes locally owned boutique properties and Sri Lankan hospitality brands. Examples include Glenross Living, Simpsons Forest and Aavya Cove Villas, which are locally managed and operated, ensuring tourism revenue directly supports the local economy and regional employment.

The itinerary directly supports rural farming families, village hosts, toddy tappers, temple communities and estate workers who may otherwise have limited tourism access. Experiences such as farm lunches, community encounters and cultural demonstrations provide additional income streams to rural households and local producers:

§ Farm-to-table lunch with a local farming family (Priyamali’s House)

§ Rural temple almsgiving with local hosts

§ Village cycling trails and community encounters

§ Tea estate tour led by estate owners and workers

§ Toddy tapping demonstration by local villagers

§ Local seafood restaurant dining

These experiences ensure direct income for rural families, farmers, artisans and small community enterprises across multiple regions.

EMPLOYMENT, DIVERSITY and INCLUSIVITY

The programme promotes inclusive employment by engaging diverse local stakeholders including rural families, estate communities, conservation researchers, chefs and village hosts regardless of gender, ethnicity or background, reflecting Sri Lanka’s multicultural society.

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is generally welcoming to international travelers. The curated nature of this small-group cultural journey, private accommodations and professional tour leadership ensures a respectful, inclusive an safe travel environment for LGBTQ+ guests.
