Family vacations in Petra will unleash your child’s inner Indiana Jones or Lara Croft prior to studying the stars on an overnight desert camp in Wadi Rum.

Although Petra may appear the preserve of archaeologists it’s an adventure playground for the imagination and kids will find plenty to keep themselves occupied as well as warning ropes if they get too 'hands on'. There is always a fair bit of walking involved but if you can break up your time with camel rides, hotel pools (seasonal) and 4WD desert safaris, there are plenty of things to do for families in Petra & Wadi Rum. The distance from Petra to Wadi Rum (about a 2 hour drive) is easily achieved in a day with Bedouin campsites offering untold opportunities to watch stars and fall asleep listening to tales of Arabian nights.

Ride into Wadi Rum

Heading out into Wadi Rum on horseback is a great way to explore at a quicker pace; however, it’s probably an activity best left to those who have ridden a fair few times before. Camels offer a much safer option and you’ll find a good range of circular trails and longer distances that can be undertaken with a knowledgeable local guide.

Traveling by 4x4

Traveling as a family by 4x4 will take you further into the desert than you ever imagined but you know your kids and should certainly be aware that four hours in a vehicle won’t be appreciated by everyone. Private tours allow you to stop and walk for a bit to break up the journey but, as always, don’t forget the hat, shades and sun block.
