1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The escape to the quiet islands of Koh Mak and Koh Kood were relaxing. We enjoyed using the motorbike to get around the island, scuba, and delectable thai
seafood dishes.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We stayed in mostly resorts which had local staff. I'm not sure how our presence directly contributed financially to the local population or conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

For what we sought, which was a relaxing island hopping experience, we were able to do an impressive amount of things with the limited time we had.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

As with all our vacations, the accommodation you will stay at has been chosen to meet at least our basic environmental criteria, which include putting in place measures to conserve energy and reduce water usage and providing advice on how you can reduce your own footprint while you’re there. All the places you stay at buy their food locally, cutting down transport emissions and helping local farmers. Some of them have also been awarded the ASEAN Green Leaf certification which additionally covers air quality, waste management and co-operation with communities, amongst other areas.

We see protecting the environment as crucially important, especially in beautiful and fragile areas like Koh Chang national park. For this reason, we have chosen Thai partners that active promote higher environmental standards in Thai tourism as part of the Green Leaf Foundation. They are also developing new kinds of vacations that combine ecotourism and community tourism, for example working with the Doi Tung royal project which helps hill tribe people to protect their lands and traditions, or developing vacations at organic farms and the Petchaburi wildlife center.

People

Creating social and economic benefits for local people is the central goal of our company and as such we try to incorporate meaningful interaction with locals in all our vacations. One of the best ways of doing this is by staying at family-owned guest houses rather than big resorts which also spreads income from tourism more widely - we can suggest many great places in Koh Chang. If you'd like to stay at a hotel, we have chosen ones that employ all or nearly all Thai staff, provide them with training to further their careers and which give something back to the community through donations or selling local handicrafts.

We buy in services from small businesses wherever possible, for example for snorkelling and islands tours, again helping spread the money from tourism to more people. You might also choose to have an Engish-speaking guide who can introduce you to real Thai life and point you to the best local restaurants - so much better than resort food!

Our Thai partners are as involved in community development as they are in environmental issues and they do a lot of work in the rest of the country to develop more responsible tourism. On a national level, they have pioneered synergy training, bringing together hotels, tour operators and communities to better understand each others’ needs and so create more sustainable and enjoyable vacations. We are proud to be taking part in the push for stronger responsibility in the huge, and sometimes destructive, Thai tourism market.
