Vacation information

Small group food tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Our focus on these trips is exploring our destination through regional specialities, eating where the locals eat, learning to cook traditional dishes and refreshing your palate with the local tipple! Our usual grass roots style of travel is still very much in evidence and you'll still get to explore a region's highlights as well as more out of the way places under the guidance of your group leader, but there will be a lot of focus on the unique flavours of the region you are visiting.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

San Sabastian, and the wonderful cooking experience with Chef Ben, also met some great people.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Get enough information about the guide and what level of involvement can be expected from him/her.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Very little. The buses that had to return every night with a new one sent to collect us in the morning, certainly increased the carbon footprint greatly.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Expensive, with some bad hotel choices. Not the immersive experience I hoped for.

Hello Marianne, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your Real Food Adventures trip in Spain. We appreciate your insights and will address each of your comments below.

We're delighted to hear that San Sebastian and the cooking experience with Chef Ben were highlights of your trip. Meeting new people and engaging in local culinary traditions are key elements we aim to offer on our tours.

Your suggestion to obtain detailed information about the guide's involvement is valuable. We strive to provide clear communication about the roles and expectations of our guides. We'll work on improving this aspect to ensure future travelers are well-informed.

We regret that the transportation arrangements negatively impacted your experience. While our goal is to minimize environmental impacts, your feedback is an important reminder that we could always improve our current practices. Since 2010, we have been a carbon-neutral company, actively measuring and offsetting our carbon emissions through various international projects. We are continuously seeking ways to reduce our environmental footprint, including efforts to reduce plastic waste and emissions from transport. Please be assured that we are committed to exploring additional measures to enhance our sustainability practices.

We are sorry to hear that your vacation did not meet your expectations in terms of cost and accommodation quality. Our trips are designed to provide authentic experiences using public transport and tourist-class accommodation (2-3 stars), which can vary by region. We strive to offer immersive and enjoyable experiences, and it’s disappointing that this was not reflected in your journey. Your comments will be taken into consideration as we review and enhance our offerings.

We appreciate your feedback and are dedicated to making continuous improvements to provide better travel experiences.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet and people

As a global operator, we take our role in the tourism industry very seriously. We recognise the impact that tourism has on local communities and the environment, and we plan and operate all our tours with this front of our minds. We believe that every tour operator must be responsible in the way they conduct their business, to ensure the welfare of all people and the conservation of the environment.

We are committed to operating in a responsible manner, incorporating the principles of sustainable development in the way we provide our travelers with real life experiences. These values are more than just words on a page; they are ingrained in our culture and the daily operations of every office and every trip. In addition, we expect our staff and travelers to demonstrate the principles of responsible travel - respecting people, cultures and local environments; in the distribution of wealth; in good will and cross-cultural sharing; and in contributing to sustainable development.

We believe that responsible travel is about the attitude you take with you and the choices you make when traveling - to respect and benefit local people, their cultures, economy and the environment.

We take care to use local transport throughout, and stay in small, locally owned hotels and guesthouses. This tour will lead you on a cultural and culinary journey with countless opportunities to interact with the locals and learn their gourmet secrets, from perusing the Santa Catarina markets, dining with the locals in the taverns, bars and bodegas of Barcelona, gaining an insight into the traditions of the local wineries and the chance to try your hand Catlan dishes yourself with a local expert.. We source produce locally throughout the trip, eat at local restaurants and encourage our travelers to purchase souvenirs from local artisans and recruit our on the ground team from the local community. This not only gives a fantastic insight into the country and a snap shot of day to day life, but it also puts valuable financial resources back into the local economy, creating jobs and supporting local businesses. We encourage our travelers to reduce their excess waste using a reduce, re-use and recycle policy. We also in avoidance of animal cruelty never visit places known to use cruel practices in rearing and/or slaughtering of livestock. We also make sure that foods from the endangered species list are not served on the trip.

As company our responsibilities don’t stop when our tours end. Our own in house foundation has been in operation for over 10 years; a not-for-profit fund that has distributed over AU$3 million to more than 70 non-government organisations since 2002, from health care, education, human rights, child welfare, sustainable development and in environmental and wildlife protection. Donations come from our travelers and are then matched by us dollar for dollar.
