Travel guides
This guide attempts to capture why this is considered by many to be one of the most magnificent wildlife safaris in the world.
Rwanda has three vital aspects that tourists flock to see: people and culture, national parks and gorillas!

Sustainable Safaris with a PurposeAt our core, we’re more than just a safari company – we’re guardians of the continent’s pristine beauty, committed to preserving it for generations to come. We and our esteemed partners uphold a sustainable ethos, ensuring every journey with us leaves a positive mark on the land we cherish.
Direct conservation of mountain gorillas
A significant portion of every permit goes straight into protecting gorillas and their habitat.
This includes:
• Anti-poaching patrols and ranger teams
• Veterinary care (treating injured or sick gorillas)
• Monitoring gorilla families daily
• Habitat protection and preventing deforestation
• Support research and ecological monitoring
Controlled tourism (low impact, high value)
Permits are limited (only a few people per gorilla group per day), which:
• Protects gorillas from stress and disease
• Keeps the experience exclusive
• Ensures higher revenue per visitor rather than mass tourism
This itinerary stays at Ruzizi Tented Camp.
Ruzizi Tented Camp, operated by African Parks, was developed as part of a broader tourism strategy designed to secure long-term funding for the park. Every stay directly contributes to the protection and conservation of the surrounding wilderness, helping to fund essential park management, wildlife protection and habitat preservation. Akagera’s success continues to create real, tangible opportunities for the communities that live alongside it. Initiatives like the Community Freelance Guides Cooperative are actively supporting local livelihoods, while a range of community projects — from fisheries and beekeeping to chicken and mushroom farming — provide the skills, resources, and income needed to build sustainable futures.
People
Permits to visit both Volcanoes National Park (Gorilla trekking) and Nyungwe Forest National Park play a direct role in supporting the people who live around the forest.Tourism revenue feeds into community development funds, which help finance local priorities like schools, healthcare, clean water, and infrastructure. A percentage of park fees is shared with surrounding villages, ensuring the benefits are felt beyond the park boundaries. It also creates meaningful, ongoing employment. Local people work as guides, trackers, porters, rangers, and in nearby lodges — turning conservation into a reliable source of income rather than a restriction on land use.
Park fees and tourism revenue are reinvested directly into conservation — funding ranger patrols, anti-poaching efforts, and ongoing monitoring of wildlife. This active protection helps keep the forest intact and its biodiversity thriving. It also supports long-term forest preservation.
Real income for local communities
A portion of each permit is shared with communities living around the parks, funding:
• Schools and education projects
• Health clinics
• Clean water and infrastructure
• Community development initiatives
Jobs and livelihoods
Gorilla tourism creates direct employment for local people, including:
• Rangers and trackers
• Porters (often from nearby villages)
