Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Manali trekking tour, foot hills of Himalaya

Environment

This trek is completely organize by Mr. Chouhan who is well experienced. He started his passion 11 year ago as a participant in Laddakh trekking expedition in 2006 organize by YHAI (youth hostel association of India) and last year he promoted as a field director of entire trek. He is also a Wildlife conservator. We are associated with YHAI from last ten years and we voluntary work for them in this region every year.

We try hard to maintaining the balance between Environmental concerns and increasing tourist every year in this region. We also deliver the information about mountain eco systems and challenges faced by the people living in the hilly area to the authorities (Ministry of tourism, forest, environment, health and non profit organisations). We submit our feed back to YHAI and the organisation dealing with those authorities. In small hill side villages main issue is the clinical assistance in medical emergency, these villages are not connected with the roads and transportation and in emergency they need proper medical services which is not available in those villages. While trek we distributes the emergency medical kits to villagers but this is not complete solution, they have to go to the city hospital in the case of serious injury, any complication with pregnant lady delivery time. Also because of no proper transportation there is an always shortage of cooking gas and villager depends most of the time on wood for fire and they collecting wood from near by area. These are the challenges they faced.

We participate and contributes in most of the programme and activity done by YHAI, like Rohtang clean programme was executed every year after tourist season in Himachal Pardes, medical awareness camp held in the guidance of Mr. Naveen Tiwari (YHAI) in every two to three years. We also give voluntary services in Nature study trekking, in this programme 200 to 300 students are visiting in this region from all over India and abroad.

In this tour after stay two nights in Delhi you will be reach at foothills of Himalaya and next day your trek will starts, on this trek your carbon footprint on this trip is almost nothing, on each campsite we used solar chargeable lamps and camp fire we use sustainable fire wood. Every stoppage in camps on this trek are sustainable campsite. Guest are requested to refill their water bottle and do not carry any plastic items. The waste management on each campsite is done properly. We made holes for toilets and covered holes wall with half prepare bricks and use a thick net bags so the water is soaked by bricks and waste is collect in the bags and those bags are disposed in city waste plant.

Community

Community Based Tourism is a visitor-based interaction that has meaningful participation by both, and generates economic and conservation benefits for local communities and environments.

Local communities derive income not only from providing accommodation but also guiding services, campsites, donkeys and donkey drivers, food, handicrafts (hats, socks and gloves) and even solar-heated showers by providing shower at fair charges to trekkers.

In addition, there are seven cafes employing over 30 village women using solar parabolic heaters to provide meals and boiled, filtered water to trekkers.
Certain percentage of home stay income and campsite fees is paid into the Village Conservation Fund, which finances waste management, tree planting and other environmental initiatives, cultural conservation works such as repairing mani walls (prayer walls), and creating grazing reserves for wildlife.
We also promote eco stores run by local community, these include organically-grown foodstuffs, fresh fruit juices, herbal teas and home made soaps.

We also contribute various education and awareness programmes are being regularly conducted in this area.
