Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
On our trips we strive to be environmentally-friendly in every way. In this itinerary, aside from the classic car tour of Havana and any bus transfers, all the activities you will be taking part in are practically carbon free.During this itinerary you will visit Las Terrazas biosphere reserve, Cuba’s first ever self-sufficient community dedicated to the research and protection of the local ecosystem. Included in the price of your trip is the entrance fee to Las Terrazas, which goes directly to the community’s ongoing environmental initiatives.
You will also visit Topes de Collantes natural reserve park, whose entrance fee contributes to protecting the area’s rich flora and fauna and local wildlife. Whilst exploring this protected area, your local guide will make sure you’re briefed on responsible tourism in the park.
On day 4 you lunch at Finca Coincidencia, a proudly self-sufficient farm where the owner will show us how he strives to make as little environmental impact as possible. You will also try a variety of traditional dishes, made completely from the farm´s own produce.
On this tour you will only spend two nights in hotels; the rest of the time you will be staying in local casas particulares (homestays), which produce far less waste than big hotels and consume much less energy.
People
We believe that Cuba’s most attractive quality is its people, and we like to give our clients as many opportunities as possible to interact with Cubans. On this trip you will mainly be staying in casas particulares (homestays), where you will get the chance to better understand the realities of daily life in Cuba. Not only this, but when you use a casa particular, your money goes straight into the local community, rather than into the pockets of multinational corporations.During this itinerary we visit La Vega community, a small rural settlement outside Trinidad where you can get a glimpse into rural Cuban life. Your guide will show you the local doctor´s surgery, the bodega, where locals buy rationed goods, and a local school.
We discourage hand-outs to beggars and instead give our clients the opportunity to make donations to appropriate organisations during their travels. Your guide will be happy to advise.
Where possible, we use locally-run restaurants, paladares, where profit goes straight back into the community.
Cuba is brimming with music and your salsa class with a local teacher in Trinidad will help you enjoy this vital part of Cuban life.
Our guides are very proud of their country and will take every opportunity to further your knowledge of Cuba´s rich culture and history. Historical highlights on this trip are Santa Clara, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, and of course, Havana. Entrance fees to sites such as Che Guevara´s mausoleum in Santa Clara are included in the tour price and help preserve artefacts and monuments integral to Cuba´s unique heritage.
