Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
We visit FLONA (Tapajos National Forest reserve) where we learn about the delicate ecosystem that exists in the Amazon, and how we can protect and maintain the different plants and bird species living there. All of our leaders have been trained on how to promote responsible tourism, particularly focusing on reducing the use of single-use plastic. On this trip the leader will advise you where to refill water bottles with clean, safe drink water, therefore reducing the necessity to buy plastic water bottles throughout your trip. We also expect all of our leaders to practice responsible waste management practices along the lines of a 'leave no trace' policy.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
People
Throughout this trip there are many opportunities to interact with the locals whether buying local food and medicinal herbs at Ver-O-Peso Market or visiting Caboclo communities living along the bank of the Amazon river, Indigenous communities in the Anavilhanas or listening to Carimbo music. Our boat that we take from Belem to Monte Alegre is a passenger and cargo ferry, so there is the chance to interact with local Brazilians and see lots of activity in the ports that we pass en route.During our time in Belem, the Amazon’s culinary capital, we’ll have the chance to try many indigenous plants and fruits, as well plenty of fresh seafood. We will have the opportunity to shop in these areas, spending money which will go to the local economy as well as promotion of produce from local suppliers. Our leader is Brazilian, and throughout the trip we employ guides and boat staff who reside locally, ensuring that money is spent within the local economy.
As a company we have valuable and longstanding partnerships with UK charities Toilet Twinning and Send a Cow, plus many smaller initiatives and projects around the world. We’re members of the UK travel industry body AITO because we believe it’s important to share our knowledge and experience, as well as learn from other operators.
