Carbon Reduction

As this is a walking & trekking trip, we do not need the use of vehicles for much of the tour, as our ground are exploring on foot.

We can provide vegan and vegetarian food on this tour, we just need to know at time of boking and can then ensure plant-based are provided. We include a number of meals during this trip, in locally-owned and family run establishments, including a traditional lunch made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, all paired with regional wines in Quinta do Barbusano.

In Portugal, we support The Refood mission, whos aim is to rescue quality food from waste, feed people in need and include the entire local community to co-create a more just, caring and sustainable society.

Our new 8% carbon intensity reduction target by 2030 covers the full lifecycle of travel – including flights booked directly by customers to get to and from their trips. This means by 2030, the average emissions per trip will be 8% lower than today. This approach centers on immediate, operational emission reductions — prioritising tangible, internal changes over distant ambitions.

Environment and Wildlife

We always check how the properties we use are working towards reducing their impact on the environment and the two hotels in this trip have been selected not only for their comfort, but also their sustainabilty. The hotels we use have an environmental framework which includes a tree planting initiative on Pestan-owned land, a strategy to reduce water-use, and an aim of decarbonisation by 2023.

Being a walking vacation, this is naturally low impact and we operate a Leave No Trace policy on all of our excursions.

People

Local Economy

We support the local economy in a number of ways on this trip, one of these is by employing local leaders and guides throughout the tour, who really make the experience with the local expertise and knowledge.

We include a number of locally operated activities including a visit the local Quinta do Barbusano winery to learn about Madeira’s unique winemaking traditions, and a local rum distillery in coastal Porto da Cruz.
