Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Kerala is a nature lovers paradise. It has been nominated as one of the top 5 nature destinations of the world by a leading travel magazine. You get to experience natural wonders like backwaters, jungles, hill stations, beaches, waterfalls and lakes. Such fragile ecosystem should be preserved so that the future generations can enjoy the true beauty of it. With this philosophy in mind, we ensure that minimum harm is done when visits to such ecological hot spots is arranged for you.

In Periyar National Park, you will be going on a jungle hike with the forest guard. This is the best way to experience the park as you are not harming the nature with vehicles. During the jungle hike, we use experienced guides who will make you aware about the jungles and explain how conservation efforts have helped not just the environment but benefited local tourism through employment opportunities. The same national park has an Elephant farm. Being a responsible travel company, we do not encourage a visit to this place as this involves Elephant riding.

We use the houseboat company that uses best environment practices. The houseboats are designed along the lines of traditional rice barges, or kettuvallam in local language. The hulls of the houseboats are made in the ancient traditional manner from jackfruit tree wood, with no nails—all the wood is stitched together and sealed with a natural waterproofing method made from fish oil. Within the hull, under the main deck is all the equipment that makes the houseboats ecologically responsible, including efficient engines, fresh water holding tanks, and other specialty fittings.

People

We encourage our guests to interact with local people to make them understand the day to day life and also give them a glimpse of the hospitality of the people of God’s Own Country. We make sure to engage the services from the vendors who preserve and promote the heritage and authentic culture in their neighbourhood. Just to cite an example, we utilise the services of top Kalarippayattu and Kathakali art performers so that they get employment and our guests get to experience these traditional forms of martial arts and dance.

For those interested in rural and food experiences, we have a cooking class and spice tour designed through a local family in Periyar who will offer valuable insights about Kerala cuisine and culture. Such tours are a win-win as all the entities benefit. We also encourage and partner with the companies who have initiated the creation of Talent Pools for the neighbourhood youth, trying to make their life meaningful. Most of our vendor hotels are doing their bit for the upbringing and enhancement of nearby neighbourhood. The houseboat company procures the food from neighbourhood farms that includes rice, food, fishes, spices etc. thus offering indirect benefit to the local community.
