Travel guides
This guide attempts to capture why this is considered by many to be one of the most magnificent wildlife safaris in the world.
Rwanda has three vital aspects that tourists flock to see: people and culture, national parks and gorillas!
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
We provide reusable water bottles to avoid the use of single use plastic bottles that are dangerous to the environment and are a source of much waste. This waste is difficult to dispose of both in the park and at the hotel. We work with lodges that are concerned about water use. We encourage travelers to avoid water wastage when in shower and to consider re-using their bedsheets and towels instead of daily changes. The lodge collects rain water which it uses to supplement water provision.
We take guests to the gorilla guardians village which was formally known as Iby'iwacu cultural village. This has former poachers as part of the group. They no longer poach and instead use their time to share the cultural of their land. They are involved in community engagements towards conservation of wildlife and flora. Continuing to take guests here helps in conserving the wildlife in volcanoes national park.
People
On this safari, you will be with a local tour guide resident in Rwanda. We are committed to having the local population grow in appreciating the nature around them. They then directly earn from these and are keen to interest their communities in preserving the same. It is also good exposure for them to interact with people from across the globe. The gorilla guardians village is an amazing project that continues to provide opportunities for the locals in the area. It started by targeting former poachers but currently has included many more people from the community. In addition to paying the locals working here, they provide goats and micro-finance loans to some of their members.
And lastly, visiting gorillas and golden monkeys in their natural habitats helps in preserving them and their habitants. Part of the revenue from visitors goes in paying rangers who are involved in guiding clients in the forest. The government also uses the revenue to provide good roads, heath care and education facilities.
