The clients are encouraged to reuse their towels in the lodge to reduce on energy use for laundry.
The lights are turned off in the rooms when clients are out. Clients are informed of the same on arrival.

The Lodge used in Akagera national park uses solar power.
Vegetarian menu is available on the menu daily.

Environment and Wildlife

The lodge was designed to blend in with its surroundings to ensure guests connect with nature.

Part of the money paid for experiencing the park activities is given to the community cooperatives. This has helped so much in conservation as poaching has gone down and increased animal numbers.

Just like all our tours, we minimize trash on our safaris by encouraging travelers to reuse different materials. We provide travelers with reusable water bottles. We no longer buy the small disposable water cartons but rather the bigger bottles that then ensure minimum plastic and trash on our tours. Whatever rubbish generated while on the safari must be retained in the car and safely disposed of by the driver guide.

People

Local Economy

10% of the revenue from the sale of gorilla and golden monkey permits is channelled towards local communities surrounding the national park. This money goes directly to build schools, health centers, as well as community roads. There is a compensation fund for local farmers should gorillas and golden monkeys damage their crops, which helps to ensure peaceful co-existence between wildlife and people.

On this tour, you will visit the gorilla guardians village which is run by former poachers and other community members. They earn by showcasing their culture to visitors and also run several programs that benefit the community members.

Our guides are locals in the countries we work in – they have grown up in Rwanda and are in touch with this community. In the park, you will be handed over to ranger guides - also from the community who will help you in exploring the forest. This helps with spreading the tourism dollar to many more people on the value chain.

Volcanoes national park has some areas that are steep and can be slippery in the rainy season. We encourage clients to take ‘porters’ who help make this journey easier. In return, the porters who are from the community earn the much needed money to supplement their farming incomes. They are the best conservationists of the forest because they directly earn from it.

The lodge employs people from the local population. They train them and give them opportunities for growth and promotion. The people in turn understand and appreciate conservation of the wild lands and encourage their community members on the same.
