1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing the children experience Africa and see the animals was really special, especially snorkelling with the whale sharks.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Mafia is lovely but doesn't have loads of tourists so choice of food is limited. This didn't bother us at all.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes it definitely benefited the local community and supported conservation. We were able to teach the children about sea conservation through their diving and snorkelling.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We had a brilliant vacation!

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTION

This itinerary has been designed to maximise time in each destination while minimising unnecessary travel. Rather than moving between multiple safari camps, guests spend three nights exploring Nyerere National Park from a single base before flying directly to Mafia Island, reducing overland transfers and domestic flight sectors. Both Rufiji River Camp and Butiama Beach Lodge operate on a small scale, helping to reduce resource consumption compared with larger resort developments. Guests are also encouraged to travel responsibly by carrying reusable water bottles where possible, avoiding single-use plastics and respecting the fragile terrestrial and marine environments they visit.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The itinerary showcases two of Tanzania's most important natural ecosystems. Nyerere National Park protects over 30,000 square kilometres of wilderness, providing habitat for elephant, lion, leopard, African wild dog, buffalo and hundreds of bird species. Tourism provides an important economic incentive for the long-term protection of this landscape and supports anti-poaching efforts, park management and wildlife monitoring. On Mafia Island, the protected Mafia Island Marine Park conserves coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows that support turtles, dolphins, reef fish and seasonal whale sharks. By visiting these protected areas with responsible operators, guests directly contribute to the value of conserving these remarkable ecosystems.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Tourism is a vital source of income for many communities in southern Tanzania and on Mafia Island. Throughout this journey, guest spending supports locally owned suppliers, guides, drivers, boat operators, food producers and craftspeople. Domestic flights, accommodation, excursions and park fees all contribute to sustaining employment and generating revenue that benefits the wider regional economy. Visitors also have opportunities to purchase locally made handicrafts and support small businesses, helping to ensure that tourism income remains within the communities that host them.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Our Tanzanian operating partners prioritise employing local staff wherever possible, with the vast majority of guides, hospitality staff, drivers and camp teams being Tanzanian nationals. This creates skilled, long-term employment opportunities and career development within the communities surrounding the destinations visited. Staff are employed in accordance with Tanzanian labour laws and receive at least the national minimum wage, with many employers providing additional benefits such as accommodation, meals, healthcare and ongoing training.

This itinerary can certainly for suitable for those with mobility limitations. We can discuss the realities of the experiences and what to expect as needed.
