REDUCTION OF AVOIDABLE INTERNAL FLIGHTS
On this itinerary we have intentionally limited flying to one essential internal flight (Cairo ? Aswan). The distance between the two cities is nearly 900 km, and traveling overland requires 11-13 hours by road or around 12 hours by sleeper train. We avoid overnight coach travel because travelers do not rest properly and often begin the following days exhausted; as a result, we use the flight here to maintain safety, comfort, and the proper flow of the itinerary.
Importantly, this is the only internal flight used. All other long distances, Aswan to Luxor, Luxor to Hurghada, and Hurghada to Cairo, are travelled overland in shared vehicles, avoiding the multiple domestic flights that many Egypt itineraries rely on. This approach significantly reduces avoidable aviation emissions while still delivering a balanced and enjoyable pace for guests.

USE OF SHARED, HIGH-OCCUPANCY AND LOWER-CARBON TRANSPORT
In addition to shared minibuses and coaches, a major portion of the itinerary is travelled via a shared Nile cruise boat for three nights. River transport produces lower per-person emissions than equivalent road travel and eliminates the need for long-distance coach journeys between Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor. The cruise provides efficient movement along the Nile while reducing road congestion and fuel consumption.

HUMAN-POWERED TRANSPORT
Multiple days include substantial walking: full-day walking tours at the pyramids (Day 2), GEM (Day 3), Luxor Temple (Day 6), the West Bank (Day 7), and Old Cairo & Khan el-Khalili (Day 11) . Walking reduces vehicle use at major heritage sites.

LOCAL & SEASONAL FOOD CHOICES
Egyptian meals, including the koshary lunch in Cairo and meals in the Nubian village, tend to rely on legumes, rice, seasonal vegetables and locally sourced produce. Vegan and vegetarian food is widely available on Nile cruises and in hotels. The itinerary includes multiple buffet-style meals where vegetarian options are standard.



ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

SUPPORTING HABITATS & NATURE-POSITIVE EXPERIENCES
The Nubian village stay on Day 3-4 places guests directly in a community preserving riverbank architecture and traditional building styles, which reduces pressure on the urban Aswan environment.

Additionally, excursions such as Philae Temple (island environment) and optional experiences like Wadi Rayan / Valley of the Whales directly contribute to Protected Area funding through entry fees (e.g., Wadi Rayan entrance ~US$15 per person).

SUPPORTING PROTECTED AREAS & WILDLIFE CONSERVATION
The tour includes or offers visits to several major cultural/natural heritage sites whose entrance fees support conservation and ongoing archaeological protection:
• Giza Plateau & Saqqara
• Philae Temple
• Valley of the Kings
• Karnak & Luxor Temples
• Optional Wadi Rayan / Wadi Hitan (UNESCO WHS for whale fossils).

These fees directly fund site management, erosion control, site guards, and protection of surrounding habitats.

LOCAL NATURE GUIDES & RESPONSIBLE WILDLIFE PRACTICE
All tours are conducted with local, licensed Egyptologist guides who brief travelers about respecting archaeological areas, avoiding litter, and keeping to designated paths. The Red Sea section (Hurghada) encourages responsible engagement with marine life, with optional snorkelling and diving conducted by operators who typically follow no-touch, reef-safe best practices.

Our itinerary includes a stay in a locally owned Nubian village hotel, ensuring direct economic benefits flow to the Indigenous Nubian community in Aswan. This forms an important balance alongside the 5-star hotels we use in Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada, some of which are operated by international hotel groups but employ predominantly local Egyptian staff. By combining international-standard properties with genuinely local accommodation, we ensure reliable guest comfort while still supporting community-run enterprises

LOCAL GUIDES, MARKETS & SMALL BUSINESS SUPPORT
This itinerary maximises contact with local economic actors:
• Local Egyptologist guides accompany all sightseeing.
• Visits to Nubian markets, Aswan small shops, Old Cairo souks and the Khan el-Khalili bazaar provide meaningful support to artisans (spices, textiles, jewellery, pottery).
• Optional trips (e.g., felucca tours, craft markets) further support micro-entrepreneurs.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

EMPLOYMENT OF LOCAL PEOPLE
All guides used in the tour are Egyptian, and nearly all transportation and hotel staff are locally employed. Local drivers, luggage handlers, and cruise staff provide steady employment across several destinations (Cairo, Aswan, Luxor, Hurghada).

INCOME OPPORTUNITIES FOR MARGINALISED COMMUNITIES
The overnight stay and village visit in the Nubian community provides direct income to an Indigenous group historically marginalised by the impacts of the Aswan High Dam. Activities include handicraft purchasing and local guiding.

FAIR WAGES & SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS
Ground partners in Egypt follow standard industry practices: paying at least the national minimum wage; inspecting vehicles daily; using licensed guides and drivers; and avoiding overnight coaches to reduce fatigue-related risk.

ACCESSIBILITY
While Egypt’s infrastructure varies, we strive to accommodate travelers with moderate mobility needs. Private vehicles, hotel staff assistance, and accessible hotel properties in Cairo and Hurghada can make sightseeing easier.

Important note for Nile cruise guests: some cruise boats moor alongside each other at night, requiring guests to climb between multiple boats to reach the shore. This may present challenges for travelers with limited mobility.
