Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONTo help reduce carbon emissions we begin our tour in the destination country, which allows guests to arrange their own travel and also creates flexibility if guests wish to extend their stay at either end of the tour.
As far as possible, Vegetarian and Vegan options will be provided throughout (dietary requirements are requested from guests prior to our tour commencing so this can be passed on to our accommodation in advance).
Two of our main accommodation providers, Sukau Rainforest Lodge and Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley have strong environmental and sustainability policies, enacting many practices such as using solar power to heat water, using energy saving light bulbs, minimising water usage. All of their policies and practices can be found on their websites.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
We travel in a small group in order to minimize impact on wildlife, habitats and local communities as well as to provide the best guide-to-guest ratio and more intimate wildlife encounters.
We encourage our guests to avoid single-use plastics, for example; bringing their own personal reusable water bottles for the tour.
Our ‘no paper’ policy means that all our tour information is sent to guests digitally.
This tour supports some of Borneo's key wildlife sanctuaries by including visits to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). Both are highly vulnerable species due to destruction of their habitat, whilst Sun Bears are also cruelly farmed for their bile. Both the Orangutan Centre and BSBCC rescue and rehabilitate orphaned, injured and displaced animals, whilst educating people and promoting increased habitat protection.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYWe choose to stay in accommodation which care about their environment, the surrounding wildlife, and conserving the habitats around them. Some go a step further and actively take part in environmentally focused education in their local communities, such as Sukau Rainforest Lodge who have their own non-profit organisation BEST Society. In addition, our accommodation in Kinabalu and Sepilok are locally owned and the grounds managed for wildlife.
We include visits to a number of local food and craft markets where guests are free to purchase items. With food in particular, we also encourage our guests to try different foods grown or made locally.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
We highly value local knowledge and employ a Malaysian agent and guides local to each area that we visit for their intimate understanding of the wildlife and habitats we will explore during our tour.
We support local businesses and operating partners throughout the tour which contributes to the Sabah's economy as well as embracing local culture.
All of our tours are LGBTQ+ friendly.
